Leather molding the five senses!
Conceptualized with the brain, visualized with AI, 3D designed in Rhinoceros and Fusion360, fabricated at TMDC, sewn by See you leather and installed at Leather Cluster in Igualada for the Rec festival.
I am very happy to have worked in this project, under the leadership of Miguel Guerrero Piñarto bring to life those sculptures!
I have been researching on the ancient craft of Leather moulding techniques for the last 10 years and I am fanatic admirer of the work of kofta
Leather Molding is the technique I am teaching within the Fabricademy 6 month course during the Textile Scaffold Module, where participants learn how to 3D model, prepare their files for CNC milling, fabricate them and mould the leather on their parametric patterns!

A few months ago, within the context of festival in Igualada, I got invited by to propose some artistic installations exploring leather as a material that wakes up our senses.
The 💡 idea was "the leather essence," human figure-size installations, each one focusing on our senses: smell, touch, sight,taste, and sound. I drafted some quick sketches for each of the sculptures, thinking of different interactions, textures, and techniques! As time was not on our side, I decided to use .ai to make quick renders of my ideas, and I was blown away by the results.
Our challenge was to fabricate those renders! With .studio as a leader and .es as the production space, we made a team for the leather moulding and .leather for the sewing!
All the designs were made in Rhinoceros with grasshopper, producing ready to laser cut files both for the wooden waffle structure and for the leather patterns.
In a month, we installed 3 sculptures:
The sight: a hanging illuminated eye 👁 shaped with controlable leds
The smell: a perforated scented smoke emitting sculpture
The touch: A leather moulded forest of leaves

Using AI rendering and later creating the real fabrication was a delight of a process! It was so easy to communicate with the client about what we were imagining.
