Over the past few months, 𝐍𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐚 𝐈𝐧̃𝐢𝐠𝐨 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐢́𝐚, a student from Colegio Areteia, has been part of the AITESA team through her internship program. Today, as this chapter comes to an end, we would like to take a moment to thank her for everything she has brought to our workplace.

Working alongside Nerea has reminded us that 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 makes teams strongers and creates opportunities for everyone to learn and grow together.

During a recent visit to a 100 MW Senelec- L'Officiel thermal power plant in Senegal, our team supervised the final stages of the 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐚 𝟐𝟎 𝐌𝐖 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞, supporting both the ex*****on of the works and the operational readiness of the plant.

AITESA’s WHRB preheats the heavy fuel oil (HFO) fed to the engine by recovering thermal energy from the exhaust gas stream that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere, turning waste into a valuable resource. By recovering exhaust heat to raise the HFO temperature, viscosity is reduced, enabling finer atomization at the injectors, more complete combustion, and ultimately less fuel consumed for the same power output.

Based on the engine's operating profile, this translates into approximately 𝟏,𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐎₂ 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫.

One of the key achievements of the project was the successful completion of the dismantling of the existing boiler and the installation of the new unit in just three days. This milestone was made possible through detailed planning and the preparation of dismantling and installation procedures developed by our partner company 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 before our arrival on site
Beyond installation, the visit focused on ensuring a smooth transition to operation.

Our specialists 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐨 𝐆𝐨𝐧𝐳𝐚́𝐥𝐞𝐳 𝐉𝐮𝐚𝐧 and 𝐙𝐢𝐲𝐚𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐫 provided comprehensive training to the plant operators, covering:
• Boiler operation and integration with the engine system
• Start-up and shutdown sequences
• Troubleshooting procedures

𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬

As pressure and temperature fall, oxygen and residual moisture can create the conditions for 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 in drums, evaporators, economizers and steam circuits.

The impact often appears later, during restart: longer preparation time, additional flushing, contamination of the water steam cycle, damage to protective magnetite layers or higher tube reliability risk.

That is why 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 should be defined before the shutdown, not once the equipment has already cooled down.

For short outages, wet preservation may be enough if water chemistry is properly controlled. For medium outages, nitrogen blanketing can help reduce oxygen ingress. For extended shutdowns, dry preservation is usually the most robust option, although it requires more preparation and a clear restart plan.

The key decision is to match the preservation method to the expected outage duration and the operational requirements of the next startup.

A boiler is protected when its internal environment is controlled.

In a thermosolar plant, heat represents a significant opportunity energy recovery

This was the challenge AITESA addressed in a 50 MW thermosolar plant in China. The plant had significant thermal flows available, and the objective was to make better use of them to improve overall energy efficiency within the existing power cycle.

AITESA implemented a heat recovery boiler with an integrated heat exchange train designed to improve energy recovery across four key points of the cycle:
• 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫: Preheated the high pressure feed water (over 100 bar) with the remaining HTF energy before steam generation.
• 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: Converted the recovered heat into high-pressure steam for the main power cycle.
• 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: Increased the steam energy level before turbine inlet.
• 𝐑𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: Reheated the steam after the first turbine expansion at lower pressure (over 20 bar) to support a second expansion stage.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭: an increase in overall efficiency from 35.5% to 37.5%.

For a 50 MW asset, that improvement represented 7 GWh per year of additional recovered energy that would otherwise remain unused. In thermosolar plants, this type of opportunity often starts by reviewing how the boiler and heat exchange train use the available heat across the steam cycle.

Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming Vyncke’s team, represented by 𝐃𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐕𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐲𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐦, Sales Team Manager, to AITESA’s offices.

The visit was a valuable opportunity to continue strengthening the collaboration between AITESA and VYNCKE and to explore how both companies can work together on industrial energy efficiency projects.

The complementarity between both teams is clear: VYNCKE brings strong expertise in biomass boiler technology, helping industrial plants produce thermal energy from renewable fuels, while AITESA contributes with the integration of heat recovery packages, flue gas treatment equipment and thermal systems for demanding industrial environments. This type of specialist collaboration is also a strong way to improve the competitiveness of our proposals and offer our partners more complete, integrated solutions.
