𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐬

As pressure and temperature fall, oxygen and residual moisture can create the conditions for 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 in drums, evaporators, economizers and steam circuits.

The impact often appears later, during restart: longer preparation time, additional flushing, contamination of the water steam cycle, damage to protective magnetite layers or higher tube reliability risk.

That is why 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 should be defined before the shutdown, not once the equipment has already cooled down.

For short outages, wet preservation may be enough if water chemistry is properly controlled. For medium outages, nitrogen blanketing can help reduce oxygen ingress. For extended shutdowns, dry preservation is usually the most robust option, although it requires more preparation and a clear restart plan.

The key decision is to match the preservation method to the expected outage duration and the operational requirements of the next startup.

A boiler is protected when its internal environment is controlled.

In a thermosolar plant, heat represents a significant opportunity energy recovery

This was the challenge AITESA addressed in a 50 MW thermosolar plant in China. The plant had significant thermal flows available, and the objective was to make better use of them to improve overall energy efficiency within the existing power cycle.

AITESA implemented a heat recovery boiler with an integrated heat exchange train designed to improve energy recovery across four key points of the cycle:
• 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫: Preheated the high pressure feed water (over 100 bar) with the remaining HTF energy before steam generation.
• 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: Converted the recovered heat into high-pressure steam for the main power cycle.
• 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: Increased the steam energy level before turbine inlet.
• 𝐑𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫: Reheated the steam after the first turbine expansion at lower pressure (over 20 bar) to support a second expansion stage.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭: an increase in overall efficiency from 35.5% to 37.5%.

For a 50 MW asset, that improvement represented 7 GWh per year of additional recovered energy that would otherwise remain unused. In thermosolar plants, this type of opportunity often starts by reviewing how the boiler and heat exchange train use the available heat across the steam cycle.

The visit was a valuable opportunity to continue strengthening the collaboration between AITESA and VYNCKE and to explore how both companies can work together on industrial energy efficiency projects.

Another important milestone has been reached in this AITESA fired heater project for a client in the chemical industry.

After months of engineering, fabrication, inspections and coordination, the unit is now leaving the workshop and starting its journey to the customer site.

This shipment represents much more than the physical delivery of equipment. It is the result of careful planning, close follow up and strong coordination between all the teams involved, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.

En proyectos como este, el sistema CAE aporta un apoyo clave para facilitar el desarrollo de actuaciones de eficiencia energética, haciendo posible que proyectos orientados a reducir consumos y mejorar la eficiencia lleguen a ejecutarse y contribuyan de forma real a una industria más limpia y competitiva.

Between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, three factors converge at once: peak process heat load, maximum air temperature, and minimum air density. That combination alone can cut thermal capacity by up to 44%.

And that's just one piece of the puzzle. Hot air recirculation, equipment placement, fan control strategies, and the real economics of those critical hours all play a role — and most of them go undetected until the process is already constrained.

𝐄𝐏𝐂 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 – 𝐏𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫

When a plant needs to replace a steam generation unit, the biggest constraint is usually shutdown time. At AITESA, we tackle this challenge at the workshop by delivering preassembled packaged solutions that significantly reduce site work and accelerate commissioning.

We are currently manufacturing a 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐛𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 as part of an EPC project. The entire unit is being assembled and pre-mounted as a single module ready for shipment, helping reduce installation risks and shorten the shutdown window.

𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬

The unit has been designed to operate at 256 °C and 44 kg/cm², incorporating:

• Finned tube waterwall for radiant heat absorption
• Tube screen acting as a transition between radiant and convective sections
• Upper steam drum for steam and saturated water separation
• Lower drum for saturated water circulation
• Convective tube bundles
• Supporting structure, flue gas ducting, and sealing systems
• Inspection windows and access doors for operation and maintenance

Manufacturing is being carried out in collaboration with Almacenes Metalúrgicos S.A. Grupo Almesa, adding production capacity and quality control across every component.
