🔬 We boost knowledge on the impact of micro and on the human body!
💡 In order to contribute to assess the impact of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNP) on human and environmental health, within the project, ITENE is working on two main topics:
◼ Development of computational models for the prediction, on the one hand, of the potential human exposure to MNP in occupational environments when these materials are released in industrial processes and, on the other hand, focused on predicting their fate when they are released into the environment, and their behaviour in different environmental matrices. Currently, the developed models are in the validation phase, in order to optimise the algorithms, if necessary, to increase the robustness of the predictions.
◼ Coordination of case studies for the validation of the developed methodologies focused on the characterisation, monitoring and biomonitoring of occupational exposure to MNP, and the assessment of their effects on human health. In relation to this, experimental measurements are being carried out in real environments to determine the release of micro- and nanoplastics during processes in sectors such as the production of plastic products or the treatment of plastic waste.
In addition, the European Commission has recently published a fact sheet entitled "Research and innovation to address the impact of environmental factors on health", in which it has used as an example to illustrate the collaboration between different projects related to the field of health and the case of the European Research Cluster for Understanding the Health Impacts of Micro and Nanoplastics, CUSP_Research, of which ITENE is part in the PlasticsFatE project.
📑 The PlasticsFatE project, which brings together 28 partners from 12 European countries, continues to progress with very positive results.
