One of the most enduring concepts in naval architecture is the Design Spiral.

Although the tools available to naval architects have changed dramatically over the past decades, the design process itself has remained remarkably consistent.

Every vessel evolves through a continuous sequence of interconnected decisions. Displacement influences hull shape, stability and resistance. Resistance determines propulsion requirements. Propulsion affects weight, general arrangement and economic feasibility. Each decision feeds back into the next, in an iterative process that continues until the design reaches the best possible balance.

As Lars Larsson illustrates in Principles of Yacht Design, the Design Spiral is far more than a convenient diagram. It reflects a fundamental truth of engineering: no design parameter exists in isolation.

Reducing resistance may alter the wake reaching the propeller. Improving seakeeping may influence manoeuvrability. Increasing fuel capacity may extend range while changing trim and powering requirements.

Performance prediction is therefore not simply about calculating resistance. It is about understanding how these interactions evolve a

This is one of the key ideas explored in our latest Research & Academy article:

How do naval architects predict the behaviour of a vessel before it is built?

It is one of the oldest questions in naval architecture.

Long before computers, designers relied on experience, empirical rules and model testing to anticipate how a vessel would perform at sea. Today, Computational Fluid Dynamics has become an essential part of that process, but the objective remains exactly the same: reducing uncertainty before construction begins.

In our latest article, we reflect on the evolution of performance prediction, from traditional design methods to modern CFD, and on why engineering judgement remains as important as ever.

Performance prediction is not about obtaining a single number.

It is about understanding how a vessel will behave throughout its operating life.

Wind is free.
But efficiency is engineered.

We’ve just published the 4th article of our WASP research series, led by our R&D engineer David Bujeda.

This time, we explore a simple but powerful question:

2 or 4 Flettner rotors?

Behind it lies a complex reality:
interactions, flow behavior, performance trade-offs.

Using CFD, we reveal how rotor configuration shapes:
– Energy efficiency
– Aerodynamic performance
– The future of wind-assisted shipping

Because innovation at sea is not about adding more.
It’s about designing better.

Flying over water is not magic. It’s engineering.

We’ve just completed sea trials in Valencia with an unmanned hydrofoil prototype.

A vessel that doesn’t just move through water…
it rises above it.

Less drag.
Less energy.
More autonomy.

But here’s the real challenge:

When a boat flies,
stability must be controlled, not assumed.

This project focused on validating an autonomous flight control system, bridging CFD simulations with real-world performance.

From digital flow to physical motion.
From prediction to precision.

Thanks to , and for making it possible.

Wind propulsion is reshaping the future of shipping.

We’ve just published the third article of our Wind Propulsion series, written by our Research and Development Coordinator, David Bujeda.

This piece introduces the key concepts and terminology behind wind-assisted propulsion, helping designers and engineers better understand how aerodynamic forces interact with vessel performance — the foundation for efficient and sustainable design.

Part of an ongoing series dedicated to engineering-driven wind propulsion.

New Technical Paper Released 🚀

We are proud to announce the publication of our latest research:
“Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of Flow Around a Hydrofoil: Benchmark Solution.”

This paper establishes a high-fidelity numerical benchmark for modern hydrofoil sections, with a deep focus on transition, turbulence, and ventilation-related phenomena: critical factors for performance, efficiency, and safety in foiling applications.

By pushing CFD beyond conventional limits, we reveal flow mechanisms often left unresolved:
• Laminar separation bubbles
• Near-wall dynamics
• Fine-scale turbulence effects that decisively shape hydrofoil behavior

Authors
• Andrew Baglin – Senior Naval Architect & CFD Engineer at Caponnetto Hueber
• Mario Caponnetto – CTO at Caponnetto Hueber
• Milovan Perić – Scientific Advisor at Caponnetto Hueber
