Most Difficult Aerobatic Maneuvers (2/8): 𝗣𝗨𝗚𝗔𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗩'𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗕𝗥𝗔 🐍🛫
The Cobra maneuver involves the aircraft abruptly lifting its nose to an angle between 110-180 degrees before returning to level flight. During this maneuver, the aircraft momentarily stands almost vertical, resembling a striking cobra, before resuming normal flight. This move was discovered somewhat by accident. While testing the Su-27, pilot Igor Volk encountered unstable behavior at low altitude. Instead of ejecting, as standard procedure would suggest, Volk took manual control, overriding the automatic stabilization system. By doing so, he discovered that the Su-27 could perform a dramatic nose-up maneuver without entering a spin, demonstrating its exceptional stability even at post-stall angles.
Although Igor Volk never performed the Cobra in public, it was test pilot Viktor Pugachev who first showcased it at the Le Bourget Air Show in 1989. The audience was initially alarmed, mistaking the maneuver for an impending crash when the Su-27 sharply pulled up its nose. However, the aircraft smoothly completed the maneuver and continued flying, impressing everyone present. This breathtaking display earned the maneuver its enduring name, "Pugachev's Cobra."
