Hydrogen could bring tens of thousands of jobs to Finland 👩‍🔧 VTT is helping turn pilots into scalable value chains.

🚢 Demand for hydrogen is growing fast across Europe in aviation, shipping and industry. Finland has strong assets in renewable electricity and biogenic CO₂, but progress is slowed because supply, infrastructure and markets are not developing in step.

💶 “The chicken-and-egg dilemma is that markets will not commit without reliable supply, and investment will not happen without confirmed demand,” says Jutta Nyblom from VTT.

📈 We are tackling this through the HELO project with the University of Vaasa and partners including Finnair, Metsä Group, Valio and many more. The aim is to connect production, logistics, storage and end users.

Researchers have developed a solution that enables the use of AI in cardiovascular care without compromising patient data 🧑‍⚕️💾

🏥 The concept allows hospitals and organisations to work together using their own data, without moving it to a central system. For example, AI models can be trained across different locations while keeping patient data in place.

👉 Variksenmarja. Se sisältää paljon terveellisiä yhdisteitä, joiden on esim. todettu voivan lievittää tulehdusta sekä suojaavan sydän- ja verenkiertoelimistöä. Variksenmarjasta saa tehtyä esimerkiksi erinomaisen hyvää mehua ja kiisseliä.

Tuore vai pakastettu?
👉 Tuore on paras vain silloin, jos sen syö heti. Nopeasti pakastettu marja voi olla parempi kuin jääkaappiin unohtunut tuore.

Mikä on yleisin virhe marjojen käytössä?
👉 Se, että niitä sulatetaan hitaasti huoneenlämmössä. Nopea sulatus mikrossakin säilyttää ravintoarvot paremmin. Smoothieen tai puuron päälle marjat kannattaa napata jäisinä suoraan pakkasesta.

We are proud to announce our newest spin‑off: Granarium Technologies raises €1 million to scale the world’s first renewable, affordable supercapacitors🔋♻️

⚡ Granarium Technologies is commercialising a nanocellulose‑based energy storage solution that turns waste wood and agricultural residues into fast‑response supercapacitors with far lower production costs and environmental impact than conventional technologies.

⚡The company has secured a seed funding round led by BSV Ventures joint by Beamline, with participation from Finnish Business Angels Network (FiBAN), Estonian Business Angels Network (EstBAN) and Latvian Business Angels Network (LatBAN).

⚡ Granarium is now preparing its first industrial pilots with partners in process industries. With technology and IP transferred from VTT, it is ready to scale a safe and rapidly deployable solution for short‑duration power needs and grid stability.

🗨️ “Our approach supports Europe’s strategic goals of reducing dependency on critical raw materials and building local, resilient energy infrastructure,” says Paula Viinamäki, CEO of Granarium.

⚡ The innovation arrives at a crucial moment, as global energy storage demand is expected to grow by around 40% in 2026.

From a pile of rock the size of an apartment block, mines often make a million-euro call based on a few samples 🪨

That inefficiency is where HYPERMINE began.

⛏️ Developed at VTT, HYPERMINE's technology combines laser illumination, hyperspectral sensing and machine learning to sort valuable minerals from waste directly at the excavation stage.

⛏️ The result is up to 100 times higher decision accuracy, up to 10% higher profitability for mines, and significantly lower environmental impact, including around 10% less energy use and 15% less water and acid consumption.

⛏️ HYPERMINE is now piloting the technology in mines across several countries.

What actually makes innovation happen? 💡💥

Antti Arasto leads energy research at VTT. For him, innovation starts with trust.

🤝 “Leaders can create circumstances where innovation can happen. That means trusting the people in the organisation and giving them space to think and experiment.”

🧡 Innovation also demands psychological safety. At VTT, failure is not hidden but discussed openly and even celebrated at our annual VTT Gala of Failures. “When people know they won’t be punished for failure, they dare to try new things,” Antti says.
