Ahlstrom is celebrating 175 years! Today, we’re looking back at some important milestones in our story.

In 1862, 11 years after Antti Ahlström set up his sawmill in Finland, Johan Edvard Lundström and Lars Johan Hierta established the first Munksjö paper mill in Sweden. Little did they know that one day, they’d become one.

Following Antti’s death in 1896, his wife Eva Ahlström took over company leadership, becoming one of the first female industrialists in Finland. Beyond the business, she was deeply dedicated to supporting local communities and educating young girls.

By 1919, Munksjö AB had grown enough to take a bold step of its own: listing its shares on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, opening the company up to public investment for the first time.

Two companies, two countries. Their stories would converge nearly 150 years later.

For 175 years, we have built a legacy of transformation and innovation in specialty materials. Today, we are going back to our beginnings in 1851.

This is the year when our founder Antti Ahlström set up a sawmill and rag paper mill in Lankoski, Finland. From here, we grew into the global sustainable specialty materials company we are today, continually innovating with customers and partners to create solutions for a better future.

And throughout this journey, one theme has remained constant: our commitment to being in the moment, for the future. 🚀

In the coming weeks, we’ll explore how the world has changed in these 175 years and revisit some of our key milestones. Stay tuned.

For Production Supervisor Austin Yingst, being part of Ahlstrom’s 175-year journey is a family tradition spanning more than five decades.

Austin joined our Mount Holly Springs site in 2015 as a third-generation employe. He follows his father James Yingst Jr., who joined in 1983 and retired in 2021 as a Production Supervisor, and his grandfather James Yingst Sr., who started in 1969 and retired as a Butler Street Supervisor in the early 2000s.

Over the years, Austin has built his own path on the paper machine. After several years of hands-on experience, he stepped into the role of Production Supervisor in 2025: the same role both his father and grandfather once held.
