Meet Ananya Saraf: Turning market signals into strategy

Ananya is a Senior Power System Analyst at Wärtsilä Energy, working at the centre of one of the world’s biggest transitions: the shift towards decarbonisation.

Her role is to build power system models for countries around the world, analysing how flexible balancing solutions can accelerate renewable energy integration. What keeps it exciting is that no two energy systems look the same. Each is shaped by its geography, politics, economics, and the realities of how power is produced and consumed.

But it’s the broader perspective that motivates her most.

🌍 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆
Ananya is energised by the market intelligence side of her work: following policy shifts, geopolitical tensions, and market movements — and translating them into insights that shape what Wärtsilä does next.

⚡ 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀
Her message to women considering a similar path: be adaptable and don’t be afraid of how fast the industry moves. No one has the full picture of the energy transition. A strong technical foundation matters, but what sets you apart is pairing it with real curiosity about the markets, the policies, and the shifts happening in real time.

🌱 Reliable and Flexible Energy for the Caribbean’s Tourism Hub

At Grupo Puntacana, energy doesn’t just power operations — it drives development, tourism, and the quality of life of an entire community. Since 2004, its partnership with Wärtsilä has transformed the electricity supply of one of the Caribbean’s most important regions, ensuring stability, resilience, and continuous evolution aligned with the area’s growth.

Today, this project stands as a regional benchmark thanks to:

🔹 Flexible and sustainable technology, including the Wärtsilä 34DF engine, capable of operating on multiple fuels to ensure continuity and adaptability across different scenarios.

🔹 Modern, expanding infrastructure, with a current capacity of 33 MW, meeting the rapidly increasing tourism demand.

🔹 Outstanding reliability, achieving average levels of 99% over more than 15 years of continuous operation.

🔹 Resilience under extreme conditions, maintaining stability amid high temperatures, hurricanes, and load variations — ensuring energy for hotels, businesses, and local communities.

This collaboration demonstrates how energy innovation can transform entire regions, strengthen local economies, and build a more sustainable future for the Dominican Republic.

Just one ☝️ little 🤏 problem 👇

Renewables alone aren’t enough.

There is a faster, lower-cost path to a 100% renewable energy future that produces lower CO₂ emissions.

This is where we step in. We accelerate decarbonisation with our market-leading 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 and power system expertise.

👉 Our 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 and 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 balance renewable energy by kicking in when the sun isn’t shining or wind isn’t blowing. This makes renewables more scalable and reliable.

Narendra’s Wärtsilä journey: from lifecycle services to manufacturing🔨🏭

With 25 years in various field service roles within Wärtsilä, Narendra Newaskar was ready for a new challenge. In 2022, he jumped into the opportunity of becoming Head of our Delivery Centre business in Khopoli, India, despite having no previous experience of manufacturing.

With the management’s support, Narendra and his team have dedicated themselves to improving the efficiency and transparency of DCK’s operations. Thanks to openly sharing capacity and collaborating with stakeholders, the factory is now thriving.

🗨️ “Joining as the General Manager for DCK was another kind of a trainee moment for me. I don’t think I could have landed a manufacturing role in another company, but this is what Wärtsilä is all about – the opportunities. And something I had understood during my time in services was how to manage people and run a business, which I brought with me,” Narendra shares.

🤝 Building communities beyond power generation.

In 2024, Wärtsilä and our valued customer NiuPower Limited joined forces to host a medical camp in Papa Village, Papua New Guinea, as part of NiuPower’s community investment programme. In the video below Michael Uiari, CEO of NiuPower, tells us more about this significant initiative! 🩺

NiuPower operates a 58.74MW power plant running on six Wärtsilä 34SG engines. The plant is located near Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea, surrounded by five villages. Together, we have implemented several initiatives in these villages under the community investment programme. 🏡
