What does it actually take to design a ship that performs reliably in ice? A lot of very deliberate research - much of it happening right now.

This week we published a look inside our current ice research programme. Our team is out in the field measuring brash-ice channels on the Bothnian Bay, refining simulation methods in the lab, and updating the testing procedures that underpin Finnish-Swedish ice class rules.

As lead research engineer Rikka Matala put it, fieldwork is critically important for comprehensive professional development — and we couldn't agree more.

This is the work behind the work. And it's what makes the difference when it matters most.

From DEM-CFD simulation to full-scale measurements on the Bothnian Bay, Railotech's latest research is pushing the boundaries of what ice class rules can demand — and deliver. A look at the work happening right now.

More than a century after Shackleton’s legendary expedition, Endurance still offers valuable lessons for modern icebreaker design.

This article explores how Professor Jukka Tuhkuri revisited one of polar history’s best-known ship losses through structural analysis, archival research and field observations from the Endurance22 expedition.

The conclusion is highly relevant today: ice is not a uniform operating environment. Ship structures must be designed for the actual ice regime, not assumed conditions. The article also highlights an emerging issue for polar engineering - how warming ice may change load patterns and create new safety risks.

A compelling example of how engineering, history and polar research come together to inform better vessel design.

The icebreaking season has now ended in the Great Lakes as well, following a severe winter that extended well into spring. This year, the U.S. Coast Guard concluded domestic icebreaking operations after a demanding season, with more than 30 cutters and boats delivering approximately 6,940 icebreaking hours and assisting or enabling the transit of 981 vessels.

This also serves as a timely reminder that decades of icebreaking know-how lie behind operational performance. Among the vessels supporting navigation in the Great Lakes is USCGC Mackinaw — a vessel whose development also reflects the strength of Finnish icebreaking expertise and the contribution of Railo Technology Inc.

Our article, A Finnish Solution in North American Waters, looks at how Finnish know-how helped shape solutions for one of North America’s most demanding ice environments. From hull form development to performance in ice, the story of USCGC Mackinaw shows how expertise developed in Finland has also supported reliable operations in the Great Lakes.

Baltic Sea icebreaking capacity was tested throughout the 2025–2026 winter navigation season.

Although the season was not exceptional in terms of maximum ice extent, rapid ice formation, wind-driven compression and sustained operational demand resulted in full fleet deployment across several sea areas.

By February 2026, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia and Germany had deployed a combined total of 24 icebreakers in the Baltic region. In Finland, all ten icebreakers were brought into service. The season demonstrated that operational pressure is not determined by ice extent alone, but also by the speed of ice formation, traffic demand, weather conditions and the ice-going capability of the merchant fleet.

The article also draws on insights from Tuomas Romu, who followed icebreaker activity closely throughout the season and highlights the operational implications of fleet utilisation, deployment strategy and long-term renewal planning.

Even under average ice extent conditions, ageing fleets were required to operate at or near full capacity.

When Railotech acquired its long-term design partner Bluetech Finland in 2025, it marked more than a strategic response to the growing global demand for icebreakers.

It brought together two companies with complementary expertise and a common belief in innovative engineering.

One team—covering icebreaker expertise and the full ship design chain from concept to production.

Railotech has been selected to deliver Polar Class 2 propellers and complete shaftline packages for some of the most advanced icebreakers now under construction.

In this article, we share:

- what’s being delivered (PC2 propellers, centre shaftline propulsion packages),

- where the projects are headed (Germany’s new Polarstern and Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers),

- why Hybrid DAS™ (twin azimuth + centre shaftline) is often described as “the best of both worlds”.

If you’re working with ice-class vessel projects design, procurement, or build strategy, this is worth a read.

The Swedish Maritime Administration has awarded the construction of the new icebreaker to the South Korean shipyard HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The yet-unnamed vessel, bigger and more capable than Sweden’s existing icebreakers, will be ready for the 2029–2030 icebreaking season.

This past winter has once again demonstrated how winter navigation in the Baltic Sea would not be possible without icebreakers and Sweden’s existing fleet has again served the country well, as it has done for decades. However, the icebreakers built in the 1970s and 1980s are now approaching the end of their technical lifespan and need to be gradually replaced.

Railotech has developed the next generation Swedish icebreaker in close co-operation with the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency to meet the future icebreaking needs in the Baltic Sea. In addition to Railotech’s cumulative icebreaker design expertise, the ARC 130 S design incorporates operational experience from existing Swedish and Finnish icebreakers, including the 2016-built Polaris which pioneered the azimuthing bow propulsion in the Bothnian Bay.

The new Swedish icebreaker will be the most capable Baltic Sea assistance icebreaker ever built. It’s overall operational icebreaking capability and performance even in the most challenging ice conditions in the Bothnian Bay have been thoroughly verified with extensive model tests. With a planned service life spanning half a century, the new icebreaker has been designed with emphasis on high energy-efficiency and low environmental impact with readiness for future operation using renewable methanol fuel.

Railotech is the world’s leading designer of icebreakers with 59 icebreaking vessels built and 26 under construction or planned to 26 different designs by 15 shipyards around the world since 2005.

We’ve designed icebreakers for decades - that part we at Railotech know.

Turning that experience into a concise article (and explaining it with words and visuals that make sense outside a design office)… that was a first for us.

So we wrote “The key to a successful icebreaker project” to share one lesson we see repeatedly: concept design is not a formality - it’s where you reduce risk early, or pay for it later.

In the article, we break down:

- why “let’s just adapt an existing design” often becomes a labyrinth of compromises

- what a solid icebreaker concept design should include (beyond main dimensions)

- the weight–performance balance that drives real feasibility

- why ice model testing remains the most reliable way to verify performance

If you’re a shipowner, operator, yard, or designer working on a newbuild or major conversion for ice operations, this is worth a read - because it’s far cheaper to fix a concept on paper than to fix a vessel after delivery.
