Servica Oy is responsible for sterile processing services at Kuopio University Hospital, Finland. The sterile processing department needed to facilitate the daily handling of instrument washing racks and improve ergonomics. When no ready-made solution was available, Makron designed and delivered a tailored solution built to fit the space and support everyday work.

In the first decade of the 2000s, Makron had expertise in machine manufacturing and in areas such as automation, but the company lacked design services. Leppänen wanted to correct the situation and assigned Kari Rehn to identify suitable companies. Rehn found Mekateam Oy, a company based in Savonlinna.

In 2010, Pekka Leppänen contacted Mekateam’s founder, Pekka Purho, and proposed a partnership. “I had been thinking about expansion, and Pekka called at exactly the right time,” Purho says. The companies shared a customer, Andritz, which made it easier to find common ground.

Mekateam, now Makron Engineering, has been part of Makron since 2013. It has grown into a company of more than 20 mechanical design engineers and structural analysts in Lahti and Savonlinna.

Over the past five decades, Makron has grown with determination, strengthened along the way by strategic acquisitions. This has built the strong pillars the company stands on today, with automation services being one of the most essential.

Makron Automation traces its roots back to Elmont Oy in Lahti. Makron first joined as a minority shareholder in 2006 and acquired full ownership by 2017. Elmont was a perfect fit for Makron’s long-term vision of expanding its service offering and developing its in-house expertise.

While Makron’s manufacturing operations had traditionally been based on subcontracting, Pekka Leppänen aimed to increase the company’s own know-how and steer it toward delivering complete solutions. Elmont’s expertise proved to be the ideal building block for this development.

When Pekka Leppänen purchased Bofo Oy – an unprofitable business – from a tennis buddy, few could have imagined that just a year later he would have quadrupled the company’s net sales and be preparing to acquire Makron, a company owned by industrialist Jalo Paananen. The new machine manufacturing company brought together Makron's customer-oriented approach, cutting-edge technology, and Leppänen’s vision for transforming the industry.

“My father told me that Jalo had called him one day and said, ‘You have the kind of expertise Makron needs,’” says Leppänen's daughter Johanna Vuopala, who assumed leadership of Makron in 2017.
