Range trips can be a struggle too – first try with a new shorty AR. The barrel is lower mid-tier with a 1:7 twist, factory loads with 55 gr M193-style bulk bullets probably aren’t helping either.

Let's dedicate a moment tio appreciate Spuhr QDP mount designing details, shall we? There is way more taken into consideration than most realize. Return to zero, versatility and generic ruggedness are top notch.

Rifle, FR12.7F1 Hécate II is France’s purpose-built .50 BMG anti-materiel rifle—meant to disable equipment at extreme range.
Developed by PGM Précision in the early 1990s, it was selected by the French military after trials against other large-caliber rifles for its ruggedness, precision, and reliability in harsh conditions.
Named after the Greek goddess Hecate, it reflects its role: striking from far beyond ordinary engagement distances.

When a supersonic bullet flies downrange, it creates shockwaves — sharp jumps in air density around it. In the right light, shooters can see a mirage‑like shimmering trail. They’re not seeing the bullet or the shock itself, but light bending through those density changes. This visible distortion is called schlieren.

The term is German because August Toepler (1860s) developed the first optical method to reveal such invisible density “streaks,” using the word Schliere (streak/veil in a fluid). His work underpins how we understand and visualize airflow and shockwaves today.

Sometimes the visible pattern appears to rotate. That’s because the bullet is spin‑stabilized at extremely high RPM. Its rotation drags the surrounding air into a slight helical flow, so the density gradients in the shock layer and wake form a twisting pattern. Light refracts through this spiral structure, making the schlieren shimmer look like it’s rotating along the bullet’s path.

This has to be the funniest AR mod. Ever.
20mm muzzle‑loaded black powder gun built on an 7.62 AR upper — because why not!
We’re not sure who made this, but it might be Mr. A. Witzke. Credits—and also a standing ovation to him.
- 20 mm caliber, barrel recycled from an M61 Gatling
- Bullet weight: 1450 gr / 94 g — “small asteroid” class.
- Calculated muzzle energy with typical big bore black powder MV:s +7500J / +5500 ft-lb
- Recoil broke telescopic AR stock on the first shot..
