In pneumatic conveying, the choice between dense phase and dilute phase affects process reliability.

Dilute phase conveying moves material at high velocities in a continuous air stream. It is suitable for light, free-flowing materials but can lead to increased pipeline wear, particle degradation, and higher energy use.

Dense phase conveying works at low conveying velocities. Material moves in plugs or batches, reducing friction against the pipeline and minimising wear. This makes it particularly effective for abrasive, fragile, or high-value materials.

At Kopar, conveying solutions are engineered to deliver reliable performance in the most demanding industrial environments.

If you are evaluating pneumatic conveying options, feel free to get in touch to discuss the right solution for your process.

In Finland, the 1st of May, Vappu, is one of the most expected celebrations of the year. It marks the arrival of spring and is traditionally celebrated as both International Labour Day and a festive occasion for students, families, and communities.

Vappu is also a moment to recognise the value of work and the people behind it. Finnish working culture is built on cooperation, trust, and strong expertise — qualities that are also at the core of Kopar’s daily work. Our solutions may operate in demanding industrial environments around the world, but they are made possible by the dedication and skills of the people designing, manufacturing, and servicing them.

From all of us at Kopar, we wish our colleagues, partners, and customers around the world a meaningful Labour Day and Happy First of May.

Recycling bed material helps keep stable combustion conditions while reducing the need for fresh material and lowering operational costs. At the same time, the process presents demanding challenges for material handling systems. Hot temperatures, abrasive particles, and continuous operation require robust equipment designed for reliability and a long lifecycle.

Well-designed screening, and conveying solutions play a key role in ensuring that bed material can be safely recovered, processed, and returned into the boiler process. When these systems run reliably, they support both operational stability and improved plant efficiency.

This topic will be in focus at Panndagarna 2026, where professionals from the energy and boiler industries gather to exchange experiences and discuss innovative solutions for plant operation.

Kopar will take part in Panndagarna in Halmstad, Sweden, on 28–29 April, and we look forward to meeting industry colleagues and discussing material-handling solutions for demanding boiler applications.

At Vatajankoski’s district heat plant in Finland, the shift from peat to wood-based fuel created new challenges for handling boiler bed material. Improving the recycling process was essential for both operational reliability and the safety of the plant's personnel.

The solution required robust screening and conveying systems capable of handling hot, abrasive material while running continuously in demanding conditions.

Kopar delivered a complete system designed to ensure the smooth recycling of bed material. By efficiently separating sintered lumps and returning usable material back into the process, the plant now benefits from:

-Improved material circulation and reduced waste.
- Enhanced occupational safety by cutting the manual handling of hot materials.
- Reliable long-term performance and increased plant availability.

This reference case highlights how well-designed material handling systems support both process stability and safety in modern, sustainable energy production.

Kopar representative Mika Rantanen will participate in Panndagarna 2026, taking place in Halmstad, Sweden, on 28–29 April.

Panndagarna is an annual industry conference that brings together professionals from the energy, power generation, and process industries to discuss technology development, operational challenges, and the future of heat and power production.

For Kopar, the event is a valuable opportunity to meet experts working with boilers, fuel handling, and plant operations. Reliable material handling plays a critical role in these processes from fuel feeding and conveying to ash and dust handling.

If you are attending Panndagarna, we would be happy to meet and discuss how robust mechanical and pneumatic conveying solutions can support efficient and reliable plant operation.

See you in Halmstad 👋

At the SAIMM Pyrometallurgy International Conference 2026, Kopar’s Technology Director, Eero Lehtilä, will present a talk on “Mechanical Conveying and Crushing of Waste Heat Boiler Dust”.

Drawing on recent research and practical industry experience, the presentation explores how improved design of drag chain conveyors can significantly enhance performance in demanding waste heat boiler (WHB) applications.

Waste heat boiler dust handling is a critical part of smelter operations, where reliability directly impacts process efficiency. This presentation shares insights into how mechanical conveying solutions can be engineered to meet these demanding conditions.

If you are attending the conference in Pretoria this May, join the session and connect with our team to discuss WHB dust handling solutions.

Dense phase conveying transports bulk materials pneumatically at low velocities using high-pressure compressed air. Unlike lean phase systems, material is moved through pipelines in controlled plugs rather than being fully suspended.

In this application, copper concentrate is fed into a pressure vessel and dispatched through a closed pipeline. By maintaining low-velocity transport, the system significantly reduces equipment wear, eliminates dust emissions, and ensures the gentle handling of abrasive media.

This method is ideal for complex plant layouts, as it allows for both horizontal and vertical routing while protecting the system from the high-abrasion typical of the mining and metals industries.

Kopar will participate in the SAIMM Pyrometallurgy International Conference 2026 in Pretoria, South Africa, taking place from 25–29 May 2026.

This event brings together experts and professionals from across the pyrometallurgy sector to discuss the future of the industry under the theme “Foundations of Competitiveness and Sustainability”.

For Kopar, the conference is an important opportunity to meet with industry professionals and discuss solutions for reliable and efficient material handling in demanding high-temperature processes. Our technologies support critical operations in smelters and metallurgical plants worldwide from feeding and conveying to dust handling and storage.

If you are attending the conference, we would be glad to connect and exchange insights on improving process reliability and operational efficiency in pyrometallurgical plants.

At Kopar’s testing facilities, customers can evaluate how their materials behave in real conveying conditions.

In addition to testing, we perform sieve analyses, flowability tests, and minimum fluidisation velocity (Umf) measurements. These tests help decide particle size distribution, flow characteristics, and conveying capacity.

The goal is simple: give customers reliable data before the system is installed. By testing materials in advance, we can verify performance, optimise the design, and reduce operational risks when the plant starts up.
