For many components, a refurbishment cycle can be a practical and cost-effective way to extend equipment lifetime. Instead of replacing entire units, selected parts can be removed, inspected, and restored to meet original performance requirements. ​

At Kopar, refurbishment can be carried out both at customer sites and at our own workshop facilities, depending on the size and scope of the equipment. Smaller units, such as valves, feeders, and mechanical components, can be delivered to our workshop for detailed inspection, repair, and testing under controlled conditions. ​

The conference (16–18 June 2026) brings together professionals from across the metallurgical sector to discuss the latest developments in slag handling, utilisation, and sustainable process solutions. It is a valuable platform to exchange insights on how by-products can be managed more efficiently and turned into useful resources.​

From Kopar, Harri Talvensaari and Mikko Nurmi will be there to meet customers and partners. For us, slag handling is closely linked to reliable material handling. The busiest season for maintenance and modernisation is starting.​

Our service team will be working on-site with customers, focusing on planned shutdowns, equipment upgrades, and lifecycle extensions for critical material handling systems.​

In many cases, modernisation is about finding key components, such as chains or valves, where targeted upgrades can significantly improve reliability, wear resistance, and maintenance intervals.​

Typical focus areas in current projects include:​
- Upgrading conveying equipment to handle increased capacity or changed material properties​
- Replacing worn components with improved material selections for longer service life​
- Improving sealing and dust tightness to meet stricter environmental requirements​
- Ensuring mechanical integrity under hot temperatures and continuous operation​

The reuse of slag and other process by-products is becoming increasingly relevant in modern industry.​

However, making reuse work in practice requires more than just intent; it depends on how the material can be handled, conveyed, and processed reliably.​

At Kopar’s pilot plant, we work with customers to test how different materials behave under real conveying conditions. These tests provide essential data on flow characteristics, wear behaviour, and system performance.​

This is especially important when working with slag, where variations in material properties can directly affect handling and process stability.​

With the right testing and engineering approach, it becomes possible to design solutions that support controlled material flow, reduced wear, and consistent operation, whether the goal is recycling or utilisation.​

In pneumatic conveying, the choice between dense phase and dilute phase affects process reliability.​

Dilute phase conveying moves material at high velocities in a continuous air stream. It is suitable for light, free-flowing materials but can lead to increased pipeline wear, particle degradation, and higher energy use.​

Dense phase conveying works at low conveying velocities. Material moves in plugs or batches, reducing friction against the pipeline and minimising wear. This makes it particularly effective for abrasive, fragile, or high-value materials.​
