Can bioluminescence activate photoimmunotherapy from within the tumor environment?

Researchers at Northeastern University and Cornell University engineered immune cells to generate light and tested bioluminescence-based activation of verteporfin in 3D ovarian cancer spheroids.

The result? Bioluminescence alone remained below the effective cytotoxic threshold, while conventional light activation with the ML6600 laser system produced a clear, dose-dependent therapeutic response.
