The Saimaa ringed seal is one of the rarest ringed seal species and highly endangered, as there are approximately 480 individuals according to the population estimate for 2023. 🦭
Snow and ice are vital for the survival of the cubs, as the ringed seal gives birth to its cub in a cave-like nest it has built out of snow. Due the climate change and global warming, nests are melting and several cubs in the nest have been left without vital shelter during the winter. As solutions to the lack of snow, volunteers have been working on various artificial nests which will have the potential to determine the success of the nesting of the Saimaa ringed seal also in the future.
In this important project, Elomatic’s Jukka Mikkonen and Pekka Koivukunnas (now retired) have been the brainstormers and responsible designers of artificial nests for the Saimaa ringed seal since 2016. Sebastian Kankkonen has also played a pivotal role, contributing the initial concept for these nests. In addition, their tasks have included preparing hives, installing nests and other field work, as well as expert assistance as part of the working group. The most important responsible actors in artificial nesting work are Metsähallitus Nature Services and the University of Eastern Finland.
"An artificial nest must withstand and be accessible to ringed seals in varying conditions, provide sufficient wind and heat protection, be of a suitable size and create safety for the mother ringed seal and cub," describes Jukka.
We are extremely proud of our people who are committed to protecting the Saimaa ringed seal, fostering a safe and sustainable future for this precious species.🫴
