🐟 | SEASONAL BAN ON KAWAKAWA & DONU

Starting June 1st, 2025, Fiji has implemented a seasonal ban on the harvesting (killing, taking, landing), possession, transport, and selling (offering or exposing for sale, dealing in) of Kawakawa (Grouper) and Donu (Coral Trout), two highly valued fish families. This ban will be in effect until September 30th, 2025.

This conservation measure is a key component of Fiji’s marine management strategy, aimed at protecting these species during their peak breeding season. The restriction is designed to prevent overfishing, promote sustainable fishing practices, and safeguard the health of Fiji’s marine ecosystems.

All fishers, vendors, buyers and exporters are required to observe these seasonal restrictions to ensure compliance and support conservation efforts.

Please note that the poster accompanying this initiative highlights only 27 species, but it is important to recognize that several other species within the family of Groupers and Coral Trouts are also included in the ban. The restrictions apply broadly to the family as a whole, emphasizing the importance of protecting these vital marine resources.

Breaking the ban could lead to penalties of up to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for businesses or organizations.
