🌧️ Clay shrink-swell: after five heatwaves, why is it important to monitor cracks before the rains return?
After several months of hot, dry weather, clay soils have dried out and shrunk. But with the return of the rains, a new phase begins: the re-wetting of the soil.
And it is precisely now that monitoring becomes particularly important.
A crack may close up, remain stable or continue to develop.
By starting measurements before the first significant rainfall, we establish a baseline following the dry spell and can then precisely observe how the building responds.
At FEELBAT, we go beyond simply measuring cracks: we cross-reference crack development, soil moisture and rainfall data to better understand the interactions between the environment and the structure’s behaviour.
This approach was developed in particular as part of a project supported by France 2030 and ADEME.
