Do you enjoy challenges?
If you already have some experience in spectroscopy, you know that positioning the star exactly in the center of the spectro's slit (by controlling the position of the telescope using the guide image) is essential for a good observation.
The human eye (and hand) can do this effortlessly.
But today, automatic (or even robotic) spectroscopy is becoming increasingly common, and we expect this pointing to be done automatically - even if the desired object is barely visible in the guide image.
We offer an “Online Workshop” on this very specific technical topic:
Putting the star in the slit of the spectro
(automatically)
Online workshop : robotic spectroscopy : star & slit
We have asked several experienced observers who recently worked on this subject to share their experiences and they all responded positively!
We will therefore have a series of short presentations, indicating the equipment and tools used, the methods employed (which may be simple or sophisticated), and the results obtained.
Speakers will include Patrick Chevalley (CCD Ciel), Peter Velez (remote in Australia), Sean Curry (USA), Patrick Fricker (remote in Spain), Olivier Gardel (2SPOT, remote in Chile), and others.
By sharing these experiences, we will contribute to inventing together the tools for tomorrow!
We will conclude, of course, with a question and answer session.
This workshop will take place on
Saturday, October 4, at 9 p.m.
(9 p.m. french time, 7 p.m. UTC)
By registering via the link below, you will receive the Zoom link for this workshop directly.
Note: a French version of this workshop will also be offered on Wednesday, October 1st, 2025, at 9 p.m.
