Our Managing Director’s experiences at the UN Ocean Conference:
“Almost a month ago I had the amazing opportunity to represent at the UNOC Youth and Innovation Forum. I left Lisbon with a sense of optimistic realism.
Optimistic because of all the hard-working and talented ocean professionals met that are dedicating their lives to these challenges.
Realism because, despite all the great pledges made during the conference, almost all of these ocean professionals met are still filled with a level of skepticism and fear if it will be enough, if it will turn into decisive action and even more so, if this will happen fast enough. Because make no mistake, the time to tackle the climate change, biodiversity, and pollution crisis was yesterday, not tomorrow, which makes today the best day to finally speed things up!
Speeding things up was exactly the aim of my team at the Innovathon. Large scale, continuous and detailed habitat and biodiversity data still has major gaps, yet is primordial for assessing and managing Marine Protected Areas. Sustainable financing is a big issue here. My team, Blue Echo, found a solution for this problem by using ecosystem accounting to translate this data towards the financial system. The judges recognized the value of this idea awarding us first place on Ocean Data Mapping.
