🌍 The Atlantic Ocean wasn’t always there.
Hundreds of millions of years ago, Africa and South America were connected, forming part of the ancient supercontinent Pangaea. There was no Atlantic Ocean separating them as we see today.
Over time, powerful movements deep beneath Earth’s surface caused the continents to slowly drift apart. As the landmasses separated, molten material rose along the developing boundary, creating new oceanic crust and gradually forming the Atlantic Ocean.
The process was incredibly slow—measured in centimeters per year—but over millions of years, those tiny movements transformed Earth’s geography.
Today, the shapes of South America and Africa fit together remarkably well, providing one of the classic clues that helped scientists understand continental drift and plate tectonics.
Imagine looking at Earth before the Atlantic existed…
