Microalgae production in symbiosis with the building

Invented by the architecture firm XTU Architects, the SymBIO2 project aims to provide an innovative symbiosis between microalgae and buildings. Through a controlled microalgae culture system integrated in « biofacades », thermal and chemical exchanges between microalgae culture and the host building are fully optimized. The main objectives of this project are to improve the building's green credentials and offer an alternative and cost-effective solution to algae culture farmers.

Productive, decontaminating and thermo-active new generation facades
-> A productive facade: thanks to its "biological solar panels" (photobioreactors) housing phytoplankton cultures (microalgae), this "vertical field" converts solar energy into valuable biomass for various applications ranging from health, cosmetics or foods, reducing culture temperature regulation by 80% and water consumption by 90 %.
-> A decontaminating facade: this particular photosynthesis is five times more effective in recycling CO2 into O2 than a growing forest and upcycles rainwater and even grey water for cultures, thus contributing to climate change mitigation and conservation of the city's vital resources.
-> A thermo-active facade: being maintained at an average temperature of 22°C, the shell becomes thermo "active" and potentially decreases the building's thermal energy needs by 50%, while reducing the urban heat island effect.
