An Australian serving with the RAAF, Gale reached operations in 1942 with No. 111 Squadron on Spitfires. He fought through the Tunisian campaign, claiming victories against Axis aircraft and rising to become a flight commander. Awarded the DFC in 1943, he later returned to Europe and joined No. 165 Squadron shortly after D-Day.

Promoted to command the squadron in March 1945, Gale led the unit during its final months of operations after its conversion from Spitfires to Mustang Mk.IIIs. He remained in command until the end of the war and returned to Australia in late 1945.

🇬🇧 🇳🇴 Our latest addition to the RAF in Combat collection is dedicated to Major Arne Austeen DFC and his North American Mustang Mk III KH570 of No. 126 Squadron, flown from Coltishall in spring 1945.

After escaping occupied Norway in a remarkable journey that took him through Sweden, the Soviet Union, Japan and the United States, Austeen reached “Little Norway” in Canada in 1941 and retrained as a fighter pilot. Flying with several RAF and Norwegian squadrons, he became a successful fighter pilot on Spitfires, claiming six victories before receiving the DFC in 1944.

In February 1945, he took command of No. 126 Squadron on Mustang Mk IIIs. On 4 May 1945, while attacking German U-boats, his aircraft was hit by flak and he was killed in action, becoming the last Norwegian pilot to die during the Second World War.
