The cement is coming out — and the walls can finally breathe again.
Lime pointing season has started in Aberdeen.
Across the city, many traditional granite and stone properties were originally built with lime mortar. Over the years, a lot of them have been repointed with hard cement — usually because it looked stronger, quicker and cheaper at the time.
The problem is that older solid walls do not work like modern cavity walls. They need to manage moisture. Lime mortar allows moisture to move and evaporate. Hard cement can trap it inside the masonry, which may lead to damp patches, damaged stone edges, cracking and long-term decay.
That is why our lime pointing process is not just “scrape out and fill again”.
First, we carefully remove the hard cement pointing.
Then we clean the joints back to sound material and inspect what is happening inside the wall. In many cases, we allow the masonry to dry before repointing, because trapped moisture behind cement is one of the main reasons these walls start to fail.
Once the wall is ready, we repoint using suitable NHL lime mortar, compacted deeply into the joints by hand.
We also use a churn-brush / tapping finish once the mortar is firm but still workable. This helps compact the mortar, close shrinkage gaps, improve the bond, expose the aggregate, and leave a breathable textured finish that cures properly.
Good lime pointing is not only about how the wall looks on day one.
It is about how the wall performs over the next few winters.
We have already helped many Aberdeen residents repair and protect their traditional stonework, and we still have a few spaces available for this season.
