The creation of the GUH recognises the tremendous scale and potential of underwater engineering and technology as a valuable, standalone industry sector.

The GUH STEM Challenge 2026 begins this week.

Over the coming weeks, pupils aged 13–14 will take part in hands-on STEM challenges designed to spark curiosity and open up future careers interest in the underwater sector.

🤝Supported by industry sponsors, the challenge will visit six locations across the UK before the final in Westhill, Aberdeenshire.

⭐️ Subsea Expo Awards – Medium-sized Company of the Year winner
Each year, the Subsea Expo Awards celebrate the achievements of companies and individuals at the forefront of the UK’s £9.4billion underwater industry. The Company of the Year Awards recognise excellence in overall company performance. For 2026, the accolade for a medium-sized business – one with 50–250 employees – was presented to the UK division of MacArtney Underwater Technology Group.

Kevin Murray, MacArtney’s regional director for the UK and Ireland, reflected on the firm’s win.

⭐️ Subsea Expo Awards – Cross Sector Innovation Award winner
Technology and innovation has driven forward the subsea sector and wider underwater industry for decades. That pioneering spirit and desire to drive impactful change is more evident today than ever and is acknowledged at the Subsea Expo Awards in the Cross Sector Innovation Award.

The 2026 award was won by Bristol-based Viper Innovations, recognising the development of its Spread Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry technology. After being presented with the accolade, Daniel Denning gave his reaction to the company winning the award.

⭐️ Subsea Expo Awards – Outstanding Contribution Award winner
Each year, at the Subsea Expo Awards the evening springs a surprise for one individual in the room as they are named the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution Award. Slowly, as the citation is read out the audience and the recipient realise who is being honoured.

The 2026 Subsea Expo Awards Outstanding Contribution Award was presented to Zander Bruce, global subsea discipline engineering manager with bp in Aberdeen. A well-known and much respected figure in the energy industry in north-east Scotland, Zander has spent the last 25 years with bp where he has managed the extensive subsea infrastructure operated by the firm in the North Sea.

Moments after being presented with the award by Global Underwater Hub chair Andrew Hodgson and Stuart Cameron from Boskalis Subsea Services, a shocked and surprised Zander gave his reaction to being honoured with this award.

⭐️ Subsea Expo Awards – Workforce Development Initiative Award winner
A new award at this year’s Subsea Expo Awards was the Workforce Development Initiative, which celebrated an organisation’s commitment to employee development through the implementation and delivery of a cohesive learning and development programme.

The inaugural award in this category was presented to South Hampshire College Group for its Tech+Tour initiative. Jackson Ottley, Tech+Tour coordinator with the South Hampshire College Group collected the award and gave his reaction to being handed the accolade.
