May 2026 sees the beginning of a new era for SFF Services Limited (SFFSL) and Marine Environmental Solutions Limited (MES). After thirty years of valued service Steven Alexander stepped down as Managing Director at the end of April and we all wish him well in his retirement.

Sheryl Gove has now assumed the Managing Director role, joining the Executive Team, alongside the Chief Executive Officer, Elspeth Macdonald and Finance Director, Derek Duthie. Sheryl has overseen a restructuring of the Marine Operations Team to allow the high quality SFFSL/MES service provision to continue seamlessly. Commenting on the changes, Sheryl said:

“Greg Wood has been promoted to Marine Operations Lead, a crucial role in the delivery our of our Guard Vessel and Offshore Personnel services, and the new point of contact for Skipper enquiries.

“Andrew Third has been appointed Marine Assurance Lead in recognition of additional workload responsibilities and his achievement of becoming a CMID Approved Vessel Inspector.

“Andrew Innes is now our Marine Technical Specialist and will continue to provide his invaluable expertise to the Marine Operations Team as well as contributing more widely to the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation policy work.

“We are also very grateful to have Iain Brydon join recently as QHSE Lead, to oversee the company management systems and to provide operational support to Greg.

“Ali Butler’s excellent marketing and design skills completes the Marine Operations Team and our first-rate Support Team always help to ensure smooth sailing ahead. Everyone’s hard work and dedication is much appreciated and with all hands on deck we are full steam ahead into this exciting new phase!”

Something a bit different… a rare crew setup and another vessel added to the list.

The Caledonia III (BCK35) is back from a successful guard job for SFF Services Limited and all of the crew sailing on the trip were brothers. Many thanks to Marc, William, Alex and Bobby Addison.

As Andrew Third our Marine Assurance Officer pointed out, “it’s not something you come across often — whether on fishing or guard work”.

On another note, this trip also marks a milestone: Caledonia III becomes the 578th different vessel used by SFF Services Limited since 2000.

We are actively seeking to increase our pool of Fisheries Liaison Officers to cover future offshore work requirements in 2026 and beyond.

The role of the Fisheries Liaison Officer (FLO) involves the use of local knowledge and fisheries experience to assist marine operations by encouraging co-operation between offshore companies and fishermen.

Requirements include:
✅Under 16.5m Skipper’s Ticket or above
✅A valid offshore survival certificate - PST, BOSIET/FOET
✅A valid offshore ENG1 medical certificate

Frequency and duration of trips vary and the work can be seasonal and ad-hoc, therefore the FLO role would not be suitable for someone seeking full-time employment.

A CV detailing relevant certificates and experience should be sent to [email protected]

Tribute paid to retiring SFF Services Ltd MD as new boss takes over

A new Managing Director is to take the helm at SFF Services Limited, the commercial wing of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, with the upcoming retirement of long-serving incumbent Steven Alexander.

Sheryl Gove has been promoted to MD Designate of both SFF Services Limited and its subsidiary company Marine Environmental Solutions Limited and will make the step up to MD when Steven stands down in April.

“Steven has been with SFF Services for 30 years, and has been MD for the past 10 years, so his retirement will be a significant change for the company,” said Board Chairman Brian Isbister.

“But we are very fortunate in having Sheryl, currently our Marine Operations and QHSE Manager, who started working here in 2011 and who will be a very able replacement.

“I would like on behalf of both companies to thank Steven for his unstinting service and welcome Sheryl into her new role.”

Steven said: “It has been a privilege to work with the great team here at SFF Services and with all our valued clients, and I will leave in April knowing that in my retirement the companies will be in good hands.”

Sheryl added: “Steven’s will be very big shoes to fill, but I am very much looking forward to taking over and building on his legacy.”

Steven joined the SFF Services marine operations team in March 1996, establishing himself as a key player in developing systems and service delivery. He was promoted to Director of Marine Operations in 2012 then to Director of Business Development in October 2013 and to Managing Director in January 2016.
