I have been watching the TV series Silo where Mechanical Engineers appear to be like the heroes of the silo.
So I thought I would share some other shows and films for you if you like this style.

Iron Man: Tony Stark designs and builds his own metal suit and keeps redesigning and upgrading it through the films.

Silo: The mechanical team are responsible for keeping the whole silo running.

Snowpiercer: In a dystopian world the train keeps everyone alive and the engine gets modified and repaired by the people in charge of it to keep it running.

Rogue One: The Death Star has a design flaw built into it and the team try and steal the plans to find it.

Wall-E: Wall-E is a PIXAR maintenance robot still doing his job and repairing himself long after everyone else has gone.

Real Steel: The robots fighting in the ring are built and repaired by their teams between fights.

Oblivion: Tom Cruise plays a technician whose job is maintaining and repairing drones.

Last Friday started with a walk past the pelicans at Birdcage Walk in London.
I was on my way to run one of 6 Value Engineering courses we've got scheduled between now and the end of the year.

By the end of the day the group were presenting their optimised product using the process they'd learned on the day.

Value Engineering is about improving function or features and/or reducing cost without sacrificing quality. We worked through a variety of tools across the day and the group did a great job applying them to a real product in one of the training rooms of Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Wow - 10 years in business this week and what a ride. Success is not possible without solid connections and collaborations because helping people is our focus - we have worked with people all over the world supporting maintenance, asset management and project management operations.

10 years ago when we started, we concentrated on local businesses. It was not possible for us to reach the national and international market as easily as but with the advancement of online collaboration tools and software, anything is possible.

Now we can be doing a course in Europe in the morning, UK by day and USA in the evening. We even have multiple countries and time zones join the same course at the same time (relatively speaking).

Who knows what the next 10 years will bring but we are looking forward to meeting you if we haven't already.

For those we have - thank you, it would not be possible without you!

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where a simple maintenance issue turns into a complicated project? It happens all the time. You start with routine inspections, find a defect and then you need to sort out procurement, risk assessments and manage people.

Rigs to the left of me, turbines to the right, and I'm stuck in the middle.
Back in Dundee, helping with maintenance planning & scheduling and project support. It's always interesting to see the quayside mix of old & new but both will continue to play an important part in the energy landscape, as well as future roles for engineers in the region.

Project management is an important skill for an engineer, often not part of the curriculum though. My first Dundee visit for this week is to work with a team developing project management skills and processes. Nice to be relatively local for the next few weeks seeing some great work being undertaken in Scottish Manufacturing and Engineering.
