Riser deformation detected… what next?
For one operator in the Norwegian North Sea, the only answer was Viewport3.

We guided the ROV team to capture precise subsea 3D scans -no excavation, no delay.

The data confirmed the riser could remain in service and allowed engineers to build a retaining clamp that fit perfectly on the first attempt, in order to hold the flexible in it’s new ‘shape’.

Results:
✔️ No riser replacement required
✔️ First-time-fit engineering enabled by accurate 3D data

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 👻

A few Halloweens ago, we shone our 3D light on one of Scotland’s most mysterious ruins — Slains Castle in Cruden Bay. Legend has it, this eerie site inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula! 🦇
Armed with advanced 3D scanning technology, Chris Harvey from the Viewport3 team ventured into the dark corners of this historic landmark. The result was a highly detailed 3D model that revealed every haunting archway and shadowy passageway.

The world has long linked Stoker’s novel to Slain’s castle, supported in part by his mention of “a small octagonal room”, which is a prominent feature in the 3D data.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Viewport3 teamed up with a team of international explorers to process pioneering underwater 3D scans of the bow and stern of the USS Grunion, a submarine lost in 1942. This collaboration was part of the “Lost 52 Project,” aimed at honouring the men, their memory, and their mission.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Viewport3 also fused 3D data with high-intensity side scan sonar to reveal the relative locations of the submarine parts and the mark made by the stern as it slid down an underwater volcano. In total, we processed 25 hours of HD video, totalling 5.3 trillion pixels. New methods were developed to transform the data into 3D geometry for global study and sharing.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝟯?

Our photogrammetry technology offers non-destructive site inspection, optimal resource management, and cost-effective capture techniques. The US Navy Heritage Command praised our work, and Tiburon highlighted the revolutionary nature of our approach for underwater archaeology.

1% error - it doesn’t sound like a lot, but when it comes to designing items for retro-fit based on 3D data, it’s more than enough to cause a failure with respect to your preference to achieve a first-time-fit during subsea installation, and no-one wants to be swearing at and hammering a repair clamp on the back-deck of a vessel!

In this instance, we collected data that was demonstrated to be accurate to 0.1%, with the client confirming a first-time-fit soon after.

At Viewport3, our team frequently help to cut the number of vessel days our clients require during retro-fit installation tasks, reducing expenditure, emissions and minimising operational disruption.

In 2018, the Viewport3 team worked with a major North Sea marine contractor to enable accurate fitting of ‘cofferdams’ to the hull of a semi-submersible asset in the Northern North Sea.

The customer required a detailed understanding of the shape of the hull, sea chests and appurtenances. We efficiently captured high-end digital data and exceeded the accuracy requirement detailed by the customer at project conception.

Between survey speed and efficiency of installation, we estimate savings to the operator of approximately 20 vessel-days, reducing the strain on IRM budgets and minimising the disruption caused by a lack of comprehensive drawing packages on older assets.

Our team at Viewport3 has some fantastic updates: a bigger office, a new workshop, and the addition of Paul McMillan as Development Engineer—just in time for the next exciting phase of ZECO (Zero-Compromise) development.

These upgrades give us the space and expertise needed to push the boundaries of underwater camera innovation toward commercial manufacturing.

𝗧𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 - 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁-𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘂𝘀 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗳 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗹𝗲

Prior to a pipe-lay campaign, our customer, GGD Engineering Ltd was tasked with preparing two spool cradles for offshore deployment, and quickly found reason to question the radius of the spool with respect to the radius detailed on the drawing. Permission to 3D scan the unit to determine actual radius was granted, and Viewport3 quickly performed a scan of the cradle, confirming that there was indeed a mis-match between advised and actual radius. The Viewport3 data was then used to confirm the required geometry changes, which were quickly applied by the GGD team.

This remedial work prevented the radius error only being identified during its first use in West Africa, saving the operator a significant recovery bill.

We were glad to collaborate with GGD Engineering Ltd once again. Their team were pleased with the 3D results and managed to successfully complete the project to the operator’s satisfaction.
