A special visit that brought our international teams together!

We were delighted to welcome our colleagues from Carter Americas to the UK for a visit to both Carter Manufacturing and UNASIS.

It was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen relationships, exchange knowledge and showcase the engineering expertise, manufacturing capabilities and specialist solutions behind our businesses.
From precision bearings and engineered solutions to aerospace bearing tooling, bringing our teams together allowed us to explore new opportunities and discuss how we can collaborate even more closely to support customers across the UK, Europe and the Americas.

Great partnerships are built through shared expertise, open conversations and time spent together—and this visit delivered all three.

Precision engineered for the coldest environments.
Manufactured by UNASIS, our cryogenic bearings are designed to operate reliably from liquid helium temperatures of -269°C through to ambient conditions.
At these extreme temperatures, standard bearing materials can become brittle, conventional lubricants may freeze, and thermal contraction can compromise bearing geometry. UNASIS addresses these challenges through:

🔹 Proprietary cryogenic heat treatment
🔹 Specialised ring, rolling-element and cage materials
🔹 Advanced dry-lubrication systems
🔹 Designs that accommodate thermal contraction
🔹 Liquid-nitrogen testing at -196°C before delivery

With NASA and ESA space heritage, these bearings support demanding applications including rocket-engine turbopumps, satellite cryocoolers, hydrogen fuel systems, LNG equipment and scientific research instruments.
Standard configurations may be available from stock, while custom bearings can be engineered for specific temperature, speed, load and environmental requirements.

Could hydrogen help power the next generation of net-zero aviation?

Hydrogen is one of the most promising alternatives to conventional aviation fuel, but it introduces significant engineering challenges—particularly for critical components such as bearings.

Hydrogen-powered aircraft may expose bearings to extreme temperatures ranging from approximately –200°C to +300°C. Hydrogen can also cause embrittlement, weakening conventional bearing materials and potentially leading to premature failure. Standard lubricants may also be unsuitable for these demanding conditions.

This specialist bearing was designed by Ben Roberts, Head of Engineering, and manufactured in the UK by UNASIS, Carter Manufacturing’s sister company. It uses carefully selected materials and lubrication technology to operate reliably in a hydrogen environment.

We are proud to contribute our engineering expertise to this forward-looking project, working alongside leading names from industry and academia to help advance hydrogen-powered aviation.

It may be a small component, but innovations like this will be essential if zero-emission flight is to become a practical reality.

Three tools. Two hours. One urgent AOG requirement.
They may not look like much, but to our customer in Vienna, these tools were vital to keeping their operation moving.

Last night, Carter’s out-of-hours team received an urgent call for support. Within just two hours, the tools had been:

✅ Identified and quoted
✅ Picked from our UK stock
✅ Packed and made ready for collection
✅ Identified and quoted
✅ Picked from our UK stock
✅ Packed and made ready for collection

They are now due to fly to Vienna this afternoon.

Manufactured in the UK by UNASIS and distributed by Carter Manufacturing, these specialist aerospace bearing tools are supported by strategically held stock in the UK and Europe—ready when our customers need them most.

Because when an aircraft is grounded, every hour matters.
