We’re grateful to see our work in Djibouti spotlighted in this new piece from The Independent, highlighting the country’s leadership in pioneering new tools against the invasive urban malaria vector, Anopheles stephensi. Read here: https://lnkd.in/eUD_QZ6C 🙏🏾

The Djibouti Friendly™ Mosquito Program is led on the ground by Djiboutian institutions and communities, with our partners at the National Malaria Control Program and Association Mutualis out in front.

Together, we’ve now launched a new season of community releases of non-biting Friendly™ mosquitoes, building on last year’s pilots. The goal: extend coverage, deepen evidence and share learnings that will help cities across the region tackle the invasive Anopheles stephensi.

A big part of what’s making this possible is the recent launch Africa's most advanced mosquito production and research facility in Djibouti - an operational hub that’s training local teams, powering releases, and anchoring a Centre of Excellence for medical entomology. 🦟

Looking ahead to 2026, we’re looking forward to working in partnership with local partners to expand Friendly™ Stephensi deployments, taking major steps towards targeted, sustainable, scalable protection of communities from the urban malaria threat spreading through Africa. 🌍

🚀 A New Era in Dengue Control Begins!

This week, we proudly marked the commissioning of the world’s largest mosquito manufacturing complex in Campinas, Brazil — an important leap forward in our mission to protect communities from dengue.

Our new state-of-the-art facility will supply the world’s two most powerful dengue control solutions at global scale: Friendly™ Aedes aegypti – the highly effective, targeted mosquito suppression technology. Wolbachia Replacement Technology – a proven, sustainable solution to block dengue transmission. 🦟

Together, these innovations will help protect up to 100 million people annually, setting Oxitec on a path to reach 1 billion by 2040.
This milestone is more than infrastructure — it’s a commitment to scaling life-saving technologies, empowering cities on the frontlines of the dengue crisis, and delivering hope where it’s needed most.

🌍 From Brazil to the world, we’re sparking a global shift in the fight against dengue.

🦟 World Mosquito Day is a reminder of the urgent fight against the rising threat of mosquito-borne disease — and of the innovation needed to protect the world’s most at-risk communities.

At Oxitec, our mission is simple: people-first solutions, built for real-world impact.

👉 Swipe through to see how three pioneering technologies are helping us:

1️⃣ Friendly™ Aedes – Protecting families from dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Our Friendly™ mosquitoes are helping cities fight back against the mosquito that causes outbreaks, giving communities, employers, and governments tools to build resilience.

2️⃣ Sparks Wolbachia – Scaling dengue-blocking Wolbachia replacement to protect 1 billion people worldwide. From Latin America to Asia-Pacific, this proven innovation is now on a path to global impact leveraging Oxitec’s professional manufacturing and operations platform.

3️⃣ Friendly™ Stephensi – Partnering with governments and local experts to tackle Anopheles stephensi — the invasive mosquito fuelling urban malaria across the African continent. Together, we’re pioneering a safe, targeted solution for rapidly growing cities that can be deployed at scale.

✨ On this World Mosquito Day, we celebrate science, partnerships, and the communities leading the way to healthier futures.

“This mosquito is rewriting the rules of malaria transmission in Africa.”

“We need something complementary to the existing tools – something sustainable and innovative.”

– Colonel Dr Abdoulilah Ahmed Abdi, Health Advisor to the President of Djibouti

A new Nature Medicine feature spotlights African-led innovation in action, detailing Djibouti’s partnership with Oxitec to develop and deploy Friendly™ Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes – a groundbreaking response to a fast-moving regional threat.

Anopheles stephensi, an invasive mosquito species thriving in urban settings, is spreading across the Horn of Africa and beyond – already detected in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan and several other countries. It evades insecticides, bites during the day, and breeds in water storage in cities – rewriting the rules of malaria transmission in Africa.

In response, Djibouti is taking a bold, science-backed approach. Driven by national leadership and grounded in partnership, this programme combines cutting-edge genetic tools with local expertise to target this dangerous vector at scale.
