Most homeowners top up their boiler pressure and think nothing of it. That might be a mistake.

Your boiler pressure should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold.

Drop below 1 and the boiler cannot circulate water properly. Your heating becomes less effective. In many cases the boiler locks out completely to protect itself.

Topping it up gets it running again. But here is the part most people miss.

If your pressure keeps dropping after you top it up, that is not a maintenance task. That is a symptom. Something in the system is losing water. It could be a small external leak. It could be a faulty pressure relief valve. It could be an internal component starting to fail.

Topping it up again and again is not solving the problem. It is delaying it.

Check your gauge today. If it is sitting below 1 bar, repressurise it. If it drops again within a few days, that is the sign to get it looked at properly.

Harrison is on one job. I am already heading to the next one. This is what WING'S looks like now.

Harrison is back on a boiler installation today and he is absolutely cracking through it. New system going in properly. Everything done to the standard we hold on every job. I do not need to be standing over him to know that. That is the point.

While he is doing that, I am on my way to the next job. Different address. Different client. Same standard.

There was a time when WING'S was one van, one engineer, and every job waited for the same pair of hands. That version of the business could only be in one place at a time. Clients waited longer. The diary filled up slowly. Growth had a ceiling.

We were called to a home in Addlestone to carry out some new gas pipework. Straightforward job. Nothing out of the ordinary planned.

Until we switched the boiler off.

It never came back on.

The boiler was so old — so worn down — that isolating it as part of our standard procedure was enough to finish it. No loud failure. No warning. It just couldn't find its way back.

Harrison got straight to work. A brand new Worcester 18RI heat-only boiler went in, and the difference was immediate. Clean startup. Proper pressure. Heating and hot water running the way it should.

We're heading back shortly to flush and clean the whole system as well. A lot of homeowners don't realise that fitting a new boiler to a dirty old system causes problems down the line, the sludge and rust that builds up over the years needs clearing out first. We never skip that step.

Before we touch a single tool, here's what we're reading:

1. The boiler: Not just whether it works, how it starts up, how long it takes to reach pressure, whether it's firing cleanly. The first few seconds tell us a lot about the health of the whole system.

2. The pressure gauge: A reading that drops the moment we arrive, or one that's been manually topped up recently, is a red flag. It means there's a leak somewhere, even if you haven't seen water.

3. The radiators: We feel the top and bottom of every radiator on our way through. Cold bottoms mean sludge. Cold tops mean air. Both tell us something different about the system.

4. The pipework: The age and material of your pipes changes everything about how we approach a job. Copper, plastic, microbore, each one has its own characteristics.
