P51 Mustang "Marinell" at the Somme Airshow 2026
This was one of my most enjoyable displays of the year, despite the fact that Marinell was performing less well. Her coolant pump was beginning to fail and she was running much hotter than normal. I was normalising the higher numbers and explaining them by the much hotter weather. However it was still a magical flight. The evening light was mesmerising.

P-51D Mustang "Marinell" - The Gun Bays.

During the extensive four and a half year restoration of P-51 Mustang "Marinell" - Maurice Hammond restored the airframe to stock configuration including the gun bays within the laminar flow wing.

The P51D Mustang was fitted with six wing-mounted .50 caliber AN/M2 Browning machine guns. When fully loaded a P51 would have 1880 rounds of am******on - just twenty seconds of continuous firing!

P51Ds were fitted with 4 types of am******on.

Armor-Piercing: Black tip. Designed to punch through light armor, engine blocks, and structural components.

Armor-Piercing Incendiary: Silver tip. Penetrated aircraft structures and initiated fires in fuel tanks.

Tracer: Red or Orange tip. Used for sighting and directing fire.

Incendiary: Light Blue tip. Designed to
ignite highly flammable components without needing to pierce heavy armor.

P51 “Marinell” at Le Touquet Airshow

Running in for the last airshow of the year at Le Touquet - 350 MPH along the coast. Beautiful weather. Beautiful scenery.

P51 "Marinell" arriving into Cannes!

Following a brilliant weekend at the Breizh Airshow, Morlaix, I flew Marinell home to Cannes. Some breathaking scenery along the way and 2.5 hours of flight time from Morlaix to Cannes.

Remaining here until Saturday when I shall head back north for Le Touquet and my final airshow of the season.
