As the weather starts to warm up, it’s a good time to pay a bit more attention to your hydraulic hoses.
In the UK, it’s not usually extreme heat that causes problems; it’s the change in conditions. Hoses that have been through months of cold, damp weather can start to show weak points once temperatures rise and systems are working harder.
What held up through winter doesn’t always hold up under heat and pressure.
A few things worth checking:
• Outer condition – Look for cracking, hardening, or any signs of the rubber starting to degrade
• Soft spots or bulging – Often a sign the hose is weakening internally
• Leaks around fittings – Expansion and contraction over time can affect seals
• Routing – Hoses that are too tight, twisted, or sitting near heat sources will wear faster
Heat affects both the hose and the system. As temperatures rise, hydraulic fluid thins and internal pressures can change, which puts more stress on the hose assembly, especially if it’s already worn.
A lot of failures we see this time of year aren’t sudden. They’ve been building up over time and only show themselves once the system is under a bit more strain.
Regular checks don’t take long, but they make a difference. Catching a worn hose early is a quick job. Leaving it usually means downtime, and never at a convenient time.
