After our recent post about the future of joinery, technology and craftsmanship
Jools Martin left us this brilliant comment
Twelve years later

Honestly, this is what it’s all about
It’s easy to sing your own praises
But it means far more when someone says it for you, unprompted, 12 years later

Still looking as good as new
Still doing exactly what they were made to do

Made to the conservation area requirements,
Conservation and heritage is our bag, of course
And our windows are set to last much longer

Because windows should not be a short-term purchase
They should be built for life

So, if you want your property's windows to be as good as new in 12+ years and with a 10-year no-quibble warranty, you know who to go to…

Thank you again, Jools.
We appreciate your comment

What does the future hold for joinery?

Technology should not replace craftsmanship.

It should raise the ceiling for what skilled people can achieve.

Technology can make manufacturing safer,

faster and more precise.

It can take on repetitive tasks.

It can support consistency.

The recent BBC article on BMW trialling humanoid robots in car manufacturing raises an interesting question for manufacturing: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgmpwzzvxr2o

But, how do we modernise without losing the people behind the product?

For us, the answer is simple.

We invest in technology.

We invest in people.

Modern manufacturing should not be a race to remove people from the process.

It should be about giving skilled workers better tools.

We use CNC machinery because precision matters.

It helps us create accurate, consistent components for high-performance timber windows and doors.

But CNCs do not replace human judgment.

They do not understand the character of timber.

They do not spot every tiny detail.

They do not bring years of skill, care, and problem-solving to complex projects.

That still comes from people.

Skilled people.

And in an industry already facing a serious skills gap, that matters.

This is not about being stuck in the past.

It is about building a better future without leaving people behind.

Because the future of joinery should not be machines instead of people.

It should be better tools in skilled hands.

Ever plastered in 30-degree heat?

Our Special Projects Director, David Brown, has

And he could have been like an ant under a magnifying glass

He spent the weekend plastering right beneath his rooflights

In the blazing, record-breaking heat

And yet…

He barely felt the heat or glare coming through the glass

Why?

Because his rooflights use double glazing with a SKN 176 glass coating

SKN 176 is a solar control glass coating designed to reduce solar gain

Which stops rooms from overheating when the sun is pouring through the glazing

That makes it especially useful for

✅ Rooflights

✅ South-facing windows

✅ Large glazed elevations

✅ Open-plan living spaces

✅ Commercial façades

✅ Showrooms

Because great glazing is not just about keeping heat in during winter

It is also about keeping spaces comfortable in summer

SKN 176 has a colour-neutral coating, which means

Clear views and high levels of natural daylight, no heavy tint

And when you combine the right glass with the right window system, you get comfort that works harder all year round

That’s why we help customers choose glazing based on the project, the elevation and how the space will actually be used

Because a south-facing bedroom and a sun-soaked rooflight do not need the same windows

What will you cut first?

The air conditioning

The fans

That extra freezer?

Energy bills are already painful

From July, they’re set to rise by 13%, adding around £221 a year to a typical household bill

That takes the average annual bill to £1,862.

And no one wants to pay more just to stay comfortable

Especially when summers are getting warmer, stickier

and harder to ignore

Comfort should not mean higher running costs

With the right windows, you can improve energy efficiency without sacrificing how your home feels

Our timber windows achieve extremely low whole-window U-values, as low as 0.77 W/m²K

That means better insulation and less wasted energy

So, you can help keep the heat where you want it

Outside in summer

Inside in winter

Plus, our 10-year warranty includes parts and labour

So, there won’t be any sneaky bills to cover in the future

Save on your energy bills now:

Historic buildings could help us solve a very modern problem

Housing.

According to Historic England,

Repairing and repurposing existing historic buildings in England could create up to 670,000 new homes

But if heritage buildings are going to become warm, liveable, efficient homes, we cannot treat energy performance as an afterthought

They need to work for modern life

That means:

✅Better insulation
The material, proportions, glazing bars, sightlines, and detailing all matter

✅Lower heat loss

✅Comfortable interiors

✅Lower running costs

✅Windows that meet modern expectations

But they also need to look right

The material, proportions, glazing bars, sightlines and detailing all matter

Especially when original or historic sash windows are such a defining part of the building’s character

That is where sensitive specification becomes crucial

Our heritage timber windows are designed to replicate the historic appearance of traditional windows

while delivering modern performance through carefully engineered timber,

slim profiles and vacuum glazing

So, the building keeps its character

The people living inside get comfort

And heritage becomes part of the housing solution,

Not an obstacle to it

Because the future of housing does not have to erase the past

Sometimes, it just needs better windows and doors

You wouldn't stick a plaster on an arterial bleed and expect it to do the job.

When you have a thermal bridging problem, high-performance glass will not stem the flow.

Why?

Because keeping heat in is also about:

1) Materials

2) Frame design

3) Precise cutting

4) Assembly

5) Installation methods

Less accurate = more gaps for heat to escape

So, you could be choosing glass with a 0.34 W/m²K centre pane u-value and still have a badly performing unit...

Not our windows though...

✅ Naturally insulating timber frames

✅ Precision manufacturing using a CNC

✅ Tight seals and minimal gaps

✅ Expert installation

✅ Whole-window performance considered from the start

That's why our full window u-values go as low as 0.77 W/m²K

Imagine a mute button for your street...

Sirens, construction sites and the morning school run

The outside world is incredibly loud

Constant noise can be overwhelming.

For , we are turning the volume down

You do not have to live with a constant headache

Our windows combine traditional timber frames with airtight seals

They actually keep the noise where it belongs

Our Silence Pack cuts external sound by up to 37 decibels

Need even more peace?

Vacuum glazing from reduces noise by an impressive 41 decibels!

Anybody who knows us knows that we LOVE vacuum glazing
So much so that we have been using in our Heritage Range for 12 years now...
We're passionate advocates

So much, we'd even love for our competition to start using it too!

Why?
Because we believe it's the best option to future-proof our Listed and Historic Buildings

Our vacuum-glazed windows have been approved in hundreds of listed and Conservation Area buildings across the UK

What we're confused about, is why we're yet to see widespread industry adoption...

It's not because it's not thin enough to replace single glazing
It's not because it's inefficient (U-values as low as 0.34- better than triple glazing!)
It's not because the warranty is short (25 years - the longest on any glazing)
It's not because it loses efficiency over time (in fact, unlike gas-filled units, there is NO loss of efficiency - Historic Scotland has done a couple of papers on this).

And these aren't even the only upsides...

So, we're left with only one conclusion: not enough people know about it!

We don't want to gatekeep it, because we passionately believe that this is the right solution for our heritage buildings.

Consequently, we are spreading the word far and wide!

Vacuum Glazing UK Ltd. is taking this show on the road and holding CPD events in key locations around the country.

Their first event is 11th May in Oxford

At that event, you will hear from:

Host: Scott Cuthbert from CN Glass Ltd | Glass & Glazing Specialists, who will give you the low down on what vacuum glazing is, how it works, the specs etc.

Expert speaker: Christopher Procter architect and author of "Climate Emergency Toolkit" and "Heritage Sash Windows Best Practice - Vacuum Glazing"

Manufacturer/Installer: Us! Jeff Guest will be shining the vacuum glazing beacon and telling you all about how we incorporate it into our windows and doors, projects that we have done with it and the impact that it has had on our business!

After all that, we bet you want to come, right?!
Whether you are an architect, conservation officer, construction professional, property developer, or window and door specialist, you are more than welcome!
