It has been a sad week at the Last Pit. On Wednesday, John Shepherd, grandfather of Alastair and father of Kevin, present day managers at Ayle Colliery, passed away.
As the second generation of the family to manage the pit and the first to own it, John not only brought the business into profit but also, through hard work and good management, left the pit in such good condition that it survives to this day.
By investing for the long term in the roadways and other infrastructure, and mechanizing to an extent far beyond other similar mines, he made Ayle Colliery the best pit to work at in the area and ensured that it had a future beyond his own tenure.
From his family, those who have worked for him and with him, and from us, the last coal miners, thank you John.

To keep the air flowing where it is supposed to, it is sometimes necessary to join an old working to a new one. Here is the moment it happens!
There is also a YouTube video showing the process more fully, link to follow.

We were joined by a team from Apedale Heritage Centre in Staffordshire this week at Ayle Colliery. They put in a shift and were still smiling (sort of) at the end of it!
Left to right, Stephen Sedgwick, Alex Dainty and Aidan Lee Croft, who also took the second photograph.

Looks like we've dug too deep. The devil himself is following us on YouTube!😈😈😈

Here to see out the old year is the final video showing the mining process at Ayle Colliery.
It completes the sequence - Shifting stone - Hewing coal - Sump and fire - Shifting stone - and so on.
Which video to start with is unimportant!

At this time of year sales for household coal are slack, but Alston Anthracite is increasingly in demand for the heritage sector. This pile of large coal will soon be on its way to the Black Country Living Museum.
