Apparently, he’s been going around helping people reduce their utility bills. Shocking behaviour. 😂

But behind the humour is something I’m genuinely passionate about.

Every week I speak with households and businesses paying more than they potentially need to for:

⚡ Energy
📶 Broadband
📱 Mobile
🏠 Home services
🏢 Commercial utilities

And sometimes the savings surprise even me.

The problem is, many people simply keep paying their bills without reviewing them.

They assume loyalty will be rewarded.
They assume their current deal is competitive.
Or they assume switching is too much hassle.

Yet a simple review could identify savings that add up significantly over a year.

For businesses, where energy consumption can be considerably higher, the numbers can become even more important.

My approach is simple:

Show me what you're currently paying and I'll see whether I can beat it.

If I can't, I'll tell you.

If I can, you decide whether it's worth switching.

No pressure. No hard sell. Just a conversation about reducing unnecessary costs.

So yes… if you see this man, approach with caution. ⚠️

The £5-a-week effect

💷 £5 doesn't sound like much money anymore…

But £5 wasted every week is £260 a year.

And that's where household budgeting gets interesting.

Most people aren't necessarily wasting hundreds of pounds in one place.
It can be:

☕ £5 here
📱 £5 extra there
📺 £5 on something forgotten
🛒 £5 because we didn't compare
💡 £5 on an unnecessary charge

Find four lots of £5 each week and that's over £1,000 across a year.

I'm not suggesting we stop enjoying life to save every penny.

Quite the opposite.

I'd rather find the money being wasted on things that give us nothing in return, so we've got more available for the things we actually enjoy.

💭 FOOD FOR THOUGHT… DO YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES EACH MONTH?

I regularly get asked how many pets I have because most people who know me know I'm a massive animal lover.

Currently, it's actually quite sensible by my standards… 😂

🐱 7 cats
🐶 1 dog

But at one point, that number was:

🐰 15 rabbits
🐱 13 cats
🐶 2 dogs
🐹 10 guinea pigs
🐔 6 chickens

Basically, a small zoo. 😂

One of the first things people normally say is:

"That must cost you a fortune to feed them all!"

My usual answer?

"Nah… probably less than I spend feeding the family."

Well… today I decided to actually practise what I preach and look properly at where my own money is going.

I spend a lot of time helping other people review their household bills, cut unnecessary costs and work out where their money disappears to.

So why shouldn't I do exactly the same?

Utilities were the obvious starting point, but I'm already pretty confident there. My residual income currently covers my household utilities, and when I switch eligible services I can benefit from up to £150 in energy credit.

So I started looking elsewhere.

Subscriptions? Surprisingly low.

Random monthly spending? Not actually as bad as I expected.

Then I got to my three biggest household expenses…

🏠 Mortgage – around £1,000 a month
🛒 Family food – around £700 a month
🐾 Pet food – £400–£500 A MONTH!

I genuinely had to look at that last one twice. 🤯

£400–£500 on pet food!

To be fair, I've always bought premium food for the cats and raw food for the dog. I've never really compromised on what I feed them.

And maybe there's something in it – almost every cat I've had has lived beyond 20 years, apart from two that sadly didn't pass from natural causes.

But it got me thinking…

We spend so much time worrying about the price of energy, broadband, insurance and subscriptions – and rightly so.

But sometimes our biggest opportunities to save aren't necessarily where we expect them to be.

⚡ Business owners: when did you last look properly at your energy usage?

Not just the total at the bottom of the bill...

The actual usage.

Equipment left running unnecessarily can contribute to business costs.

Think about:

💻 Computers
🖨️ Printers
☕ Kitchen equipment
📺 Displays
🔌 Chargers
💡 Lighting
⚙️ Other electrical equipment

One device might seem insignificant.

Multiply unnecessary consumption across several devices, every day, throughout the year, and it becomes much more interesting.

Before asking:

"How can I get cheaper energy?"

Also ask:

"How can my business use less energy?"

Efficiency and price should be considered together.

💡 Does staying loyal to a supplier actually save you money?

Many of us stay with the same providers because it's easier.

Energy.
Broadband.
Mobile.
Insurance.

But here's the important question:

When did you last actually review what you're paying?

Small increases across several household bills can add up to a surprisingly large amount over 12 months.

A financial review doesn't necessarily mean switching everything. It's about understanding:

✅ What you're paying now
✅ What you're actually using
✅ Whether you're still getting good value
✅ Whether services could be combined or reduced
✅ Whether there are unnecessary costs hiding in your bills

Knowledge gives you choices.

Challenge: Pick ONE regular household bill today and check it.

⚡ ENERGY PRICES: NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO REVIEW, NOT PANIC

I've just been looking at the latest energy price predictions, and the average across three forecasts currently suggests the Ofgem Price Cap could rise by around 5.1% from 1 October.

For a typical household, that could mean roughly £93 a year more on an annualised basis.

Why does this matter?

Energy pricing isn't just about how much gas and electricity we physically use. Wholesale energy prices, network costs, policy costs and wider market conditions can all influence what eventually lands on our bills.

And as we head towards the colder months, household consumption normally increases too.

So my message isn't "panic and switch."

It's simply:

👉 Review what you're paying.

Many people haven't looked properly at their energy tariff, broadband, mobile and other household services for months — sometimes years.

A review could mean looking at:

✅ Whether a fixed or variable energy tariff is more suitable
✅ Your current unit rates and standing charges
✅ When your existing contracts end
✅ Whether you're paying for services you don't need
✅ Whether combining household services could reduce overall costs
✅ Cashback or other ways of offsetting everyday household bills
✅ Whether your current supplier is still competitive

The cheapest headline price isn't always the best overall deal. The important thing is understanding what you're paying, what you're getting and what alternatives are available.
