🔥 Did you know that all those 'fire-rated' glass balustrades you're specifying aren't actually fire-rated?

Before you panic - here's what it actually means.

All glass balustrade systems marketed as 'fire-rated' are, in fact, non-combustible, not fire-rated. There's a big difference, and it does matter.

🔍 What's the difference?

A true fire-rated system (or fire-resistant, if we're getting really technical about it) must be fully tested as a complete glazed assembly, and that includes the appropriately tested glass, framework, intumescent seals, fixings, beadings and screws.

The complete system is then tested under very strict conditions to meet one of the official fire resistance classifications - most commonly EW or EI, for 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

🚫 So, how is this different from non-combustible systems?

It means the materials used (like the glass and any framing and components) won't contribute to the spread of fire. These components are usually tested to the A2, s1-d0 classification under EN 13501-1:

A2 = limited combustibility
s1 = little or no smoke production
d0 = no flaming droplets

💡 That's the key difference:

A non-combustible system won't ignite or add fuel to a fire, helping to prevent it from spreading🔥🚫
A fire-rated system is designed to actively contain fire, smoke and heat, for a specified amount of time🔥🛑🕒

Fire-rated glass is a truly exceptional product, and plays a critical role in protecting lives during a fire. It's one of the most important innovations in modern fire protection, and it deserves the recognition 💪

When a customer lets us know their delivery arrived damaged, we get it sorted - no drama 🙌

A replacement, a solution, whatever’s needed. But we’ll usually ask for a few photos too - not to prove anything, just so we can see what happened and try to stop it happening again.

But then the photos arrive… and it’s absolute carnage. The box looks like it went five rounds with a forklift, lost a fight with a conveyor belt, and finished its journey clinging to life in the back of a van held together by sheer will and one sad strip of tape. 📦💀

When we see those pics, our brains short-circuit and our imagination goes rogue as we try to work out what on earth happened.

Firstly, a shout out to the courier crews - we know 95% of the time it all goes smoothly. But for the other 5%... this one's for you 😂👇
