The Horizon Group is forward thinking and we are always looking to develop our service offering.

In 2018, this saw us become the first Asbestos Removal company to obtain Environment Agency permits and purchase mobile plant both for the treatment of soils and contaminated material and for the treatment of waste to produce soil.

🔋 What are the different types of Landfill? 📦

Inert - Geological barrier but no liner and no cap in place.
Examples of Inert waste: metal, wood, bricks, asphalt or cement concrete, and other building construction materials such as plaster, drywall, siding, shingles, insulation, and glass.

Non-hazardous - Requires lining and capping but testing of the leaching values is not required under EU rules, soil waste can usually be sent to non-hazardous landfill (after classification as non-hazardous) without the need for a WAC test.

Hazardous - The highest lining and capping requirements allowing it to accept wastes with a greater leaching potential. Non-reactive hazardous landfill is less common and associated with soil contaminated with hazardous levels of asbestos.

📣 A new warranty scheme could promote more house-building on derelict brownfield sites 📣

Soil stabilisation has been used for commercial and industrial projects, but residential developments have previously been obstructed by the unavailability of a specific housing industry warranty.

"Premier Guarantee proved to have the vision and understanding of the positive groundwork solutions that soil stabilisation can provide for residential developments by agreeing to provide a project warranty for the Tattenhall project, which we believe to be the first residential project in England to be so underwritten by an industry warranty and hope that this will forward the use of soil stabilisation for other such projects.” - Stefan Stansfield

Make sure you know what you will be uncovering when excavating. Horizon Remediation can offer expert advice on all soil works, and we would be happy to answer any questions our clients may have.

Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) determines how different types of waste are assigned to particular landfill types.
A WAC test will analyse the leaching ability of contaminants in the soil to identify how they will act when in landfill.
Soil waste must first be classified as non-hazardous or hazardous before WAC testing.

👷 MEET THE TEAM 👷
Scott Guichard
💼 Role: Contracts Manager
⚠️ Asbestos Remediation experience: 12 years

"I enjoy designing and managing remediation projects. Especially the challenging ones that require advance treatment and processing. There is always a great sense of satisfaction seeing a a goal reached when turning disused contaminated waste land into a clean usable development setting.

With Horizon having acquired on site treatment permits the range of treatment services the team and I can offer is vast which means we can be flexible to to meet any of the clients needs.

One of a stand out projects for me was Greatfields School - Essex. The run down site was left dormant for 20 years and we completed the project in a “one stop shop style”

From early stage desktop study through to sampling, strategy design, issuing car 2012 and Claire Guidance compliant risk assessment and plans of work before carrying out the practical site works and verification reporting. The protect was completed successfully as promised, satisfying and discharging all of the related planning conditions."
