The Cattie Burn is looking amazing in recent drone shots! It was redesigned from a straightened channel to a more natural, meandering water course.

Our restoration design for the Cattie Burn was constructed in the summer of 2024. The existing channel of the burn was straightened and incised, resulting in a homogeneous channel that was disconnected from the surrounding floodplain.

The channel was remodelled, ensuring it was better connected to the surrounding floodplain and had a more natural form. The bed material from the existing channel was transferred to the new channel, and large wood structures were installed to promote the evolution of channel form and in-channel habitat, ensuring that the river and floodplain continued to evolve in response to catchment conditions. In the future, the river will become an even better habitat for fish, invertebrates, and other local wildlife, and will continue to be monitored as the seasons pass.

This work was undertaken by the The River Dee and CBEC in partnership with Ballogie Estate and was funded by the Nature Restoration Fund.

Excavator Operator – Environmental Engineering Projects

Location: Scotland (Aberdeenshire based, with some working away during the week from time to time)

An experienced and competent excavator operator, ideally with tilt rotator experience
Able to produce high standards of finish/grading/landscaping
Reliable, proactive, and comfortable taking responsibility on site
Positive and adaptable when plans change due to site or weather conditions
Able to work unsupervised and adjust approach as conditions develop
Open to new ideas and practical problem-solving
A good communicator with colleagues, supervisors, and clients
Respectful of the working environment and takes pride in caring for plant and equipment
Safety-conscious and professional at all times

What We Offer
A strong pipeline of varied and interesting environmental engineering and rural projects
Work where no two jobs are the same and adaptability is valued
Opportunities to develop skills, experience, and responsibility
A supportive working environment built on trust and accountability
The chance to grow your role and standing within CRC.scot
