Keeping Duncan Moving, Connected & Safe
At SWL Engineering Ltd, we believe social value is not just about business, it is about people, dignity, independence, and quality of life.
Recently, we were approached regarding Mr Duncan Platt, an octogenarian and valued member of Barrow Golf Club, whose mobility golf buggy had suffered repeated breakdowns whilst out on the course.
Unfortunately, these failures meant Duncan was often left stranded and forced to walk long distances back to the clubhouse, something that had become extremely difficult and physically demanding. Eventually, the situation became so challenging that Duncan made the heartbreaking decision to stop playing the game he loved altogether.
For many people, golf is far more than a sport. It provides routine, purpose, exercise, companionship, and vital social interaction. Losing that connection can have a significant impact on a person’s health, well-being, and mental resilience, particularly later in life.
SWL Engineering stepped in to inspect and repair the buggy, initially expecting minor electrical faults. However, during the investigation, it became clear that the issues were far more serious. Alongside significant electrical defects, there were also major mechanical safety concerns which, had the buggy continued operating, could potentially have resulted in serious injury.
Our team carried out the necessary repairs and safety rectifications to return the buggy to a safe and reliable condition, enabling Duncan to get back out onto the course, reconnect with fellow members and friends, and continue enjoying the social lifestyle that golf provides.
Seeing Duncan regain both his independence and confidence is exactly why social value matters.
At SWL Engineering, we are proud that engineering is not only about machines and systems, but also about improving lives, protecting people, and supporting our community wherever we can.
