Buildings have become more complex. Has the competence to manage them kept pace?

Andrea White (A W Fire Ltd) drew on the Grenfell Tower Inquiry Phase 2 report, which identified inadequate competence, weak oversight and organisations assuming someone else held responsibility. Experience alone, she stressed, doesn't prove work has been carried out correctly.

Her closing message was direct: undertake proper due diligence when bringing in expertise, and mind the gap between what today's buildings demand and what the industry actually knows.

IGEM/UP/1B has moved to Edition 4, changing the domestic tightness testing and purging procedure that gas engineers rely on every day. Installation volume, permissible pressure drops and purge volumes are all calculated differently under the new standard.

If your engineers, supervisors and technical managers are still working to Edition 3 without realising what's moved, that's a competence gap worth closing before it shows up on site.

Shawn Greenfield (Worthing Homes) gave one of ASCP26's most candid sessions, walking through how data inherited across five asset management systems contributed to a regulatory downgrade from G1 to G2, and what it took to rebuild trust in the numbers.
His conclusion: confidence doesn't come from having more data. It comes from questioning it, verifying it, and being willing to say when something's wrong.
