Hi folks,

Hope you’re all enjoying the freedom of no exams.

Just a heads up I’ve been told about a job opportunity in the space sector and thought some of you might be interested. It would be as a graduate propulsion engineer, looking to start later this year. The job will involve using a whole range of engineering skills to produce high quality parts/systems for the space sector, most of which will be used on board satellites and robotic probes across the solar system.

If you're interested, drop me an email and I’ll give you the full job description:

Cheers,
Tate

As a result of the coronavirus outbreak, the University of Bath has shut down for the foreseeable future. We packed up everything we could fit it in our car to try and build the rocket elsewhere, but in the event that either we are unable to build the rocket due to a lack of facilities or that the Spaceport America Cup is cancelled, we would like to thank all of our supporters and sponsors throughout the past year. These include, Mechanical Engineering at Bath, 3DPHOTONiX, G&H, SEKO Logistics, the University of Bath Alumni Fund, and RS Components. Stay safe everyone!

We are delighted to have 3dphotonix on board this year as a new sponsor. 3dphotonix specialise in industrial 3D printer manufacturing as well as PCB design.

They will be designing and manufacturing a PCB which will fit in a data-collecting 'black box' housed in our avionics bay. The PCB will act as an Arduino shield, replacing our existing board pictured below with a more compact design. It will be used to capture a wide array of data relating to our rocket's orientation, acceleration, altitude, and location throughout its flight.

To find out more about 3dphotonix, visit their website: https://www.3dphotonix.com/

Our avionics bay is nearing completion! The various electronic components will be used to trigger our recovery parachute deployment and payload ejection. All that’s really left to do is to test it.

Our nose cone and fairing have arrived! We are currently manufacturing the rocket so expect many more photos soon.

We recently visited 3 local primary schools: Moorlands School (pictured), Hayesdown First School, and Bathwick St Mary Primary School (more pictures to come!). We had a lot of fun and it was great to see so many children excited about rocket engineering!
We've now visited 5 schools since September already! Please donate to allow us to keep inspiring the next generation of engineers: https://bath.hubbub.net/p/BathUniversityRocketTeam2020/. All donors will get their name on our rocket's fins!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Actuonix Motion Devices Inc. for providing us with their P16s micro linear actuator (as well as a spare!).

The actuator will be used to drive open bomb-bay style doors on the fairing of our rocket. Our payload will be ejected through the doors as the rocket is descending at an altitude of about 9500 feet!

In June of 2020 we will compete at the Spaceport America Cup in New Mexico, but we need your help! We would really appreciate donations of any amount to help us fund the various costs associated with building the rocket and competing in the US such as competition fees and accommodation. Your support will also help us to continue running outreach activities at local schools to inspire the next generation of engineers, as well as junior rocket teams. Any donations will be matched by the university’s Alumni Fund to double your support!

We have set up a crowdfunding page, which can be found at the following link: https://bath.hubbub.net/p/BathUniversityRocketTeam2020/.

Thanks to everyone who attended another great week of workshops in the meeting yesterday! This week the workshops were on Manufacturing Processes for Model Rocketry, and Structural Design of Rockets. Quite a technical mouthful! However this only reflects the progress we've made already - and after all, it IS Rocket Science... 😂
Bad jokes aside, it was awesome to see so many people this far into the semester. And if you were forced to miss it, just ask for the slides - they are easily available. 🙂🚀🚀

Another successful workshop yesterday! This one was about Avionics and Recovery Systems. Get in touch if you want the slides to catch up!
And thanks to everyone who showed up - hope you enjoyed it and learnt a lot 🚀🚀🚀

Our 2nd school visit this year took place at Paulton Junior School. The children were very excited about engineering and their rocket designs. Here are a few photos of said rockets after a busy morning of drawing and building. See our Instagram for a video of a launch: https://www.instagram.com/p/B4dGC6chxU4/.
