Body Armour for British Army soldiers is made from state-of-the-art materials such as carbon fibres, ceramics and Kevlar. But surplus body armour has to be "decommissioned" in certain circumstances to avoid it falling into the wrong hands and it can't be crushed or burnt.

Cross Cut St Martin’s Church wanted a striking new stone cross.

Aquablast Ltd, based near Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, were contracted to realise the dramatic design because of their expertise in ultra high pressure (UHP) abrasive waterjet profiling. Stonework is as simple as cutting steel with CNC controlled precision waterjet profiling.

The cross itself, an unusual “pattee cross”” design, is of Purbeck porcelain but it’s “reversed” into a slab of Caithness stone and surrounded by an outer ring composed of four quadrants in buff Yorkstone.

Aquablast’s CNC-controlled waterjet cutting is the ideal process for this —accurate to within 0.3mm so you can barely see the cut paths between the different material colours and the process is “cold” so no risk of a heat-affected zone whether cutting in stone or metals.
