As we close for the Christmas break and wrap up another successful year in business, McMahon McBennett and Paul McMahon Design would like to give our clients and followers a sneak peek at our recent design for our Co. Waterford clients; a newbuild vernacular style Irish cottage that has been integrated sympathetically into the old ruinous walls of a cottage that has stood on this site for hundreds of years.

These vernacular cottages literally grew out of the landscape that surrounded them, and that’s what we wanted to emulate with this design. We wanted to create a home that tells its own story. With light filled rooms and spaces, we have created a perfect connection and harmony between the internal and external spaces. Every turn reveals an exciting view through the building, inevitably leading you back to the breathtaking connection with the ruinous walls. The ruinous walls now form a sheltered and private external living space, with a covered canopy above part of the patio area to allow this external space to be utilised all year round.

At McMahon McBennett, we are very excited to have the opportunity to sensitively restore and extend this vernacular Irish cottage and outbuilding dating from the 1800s.

Imagine waking up in this warm and cosy home on Christmas morning, with snow falling just outside your window. Imagine getting up in the middle of the night and the bathroom floor tiles feel as warm and comfortable as your bedroom’s wooden floor.

This vernacular Irish cottage, designed by McMahon McBennett in collaboration with Paul McMahon Design, features an open plan living area clad in corrugated corten steel, also referred to as weathering steel. Our client wanted to stay true to the rustic charm of the traditional Irish farmyards of Co. Offaly, albeit with a contemporary twist.
