Yooz in Bellshill closed in January 2017 following a difficult period where ridiculous allegations made by a nasty person caused the charity regulator to investigate our charity. Nothing untoward was found by them but it took until May 2017 for them to reply to confirm. Fundamentally all we needed was a larger number of directors on the Board. By that time of courtse it was too late. Media coverage stated that we owed £300k in tax which was ridiculous.
The Board had to place the business into voluntary liquidation as we simply ran out of money to pay creditors, and its illegal to continue to trade if you can't pay your bills. Lots of things had affected our sales, including the slump in June 2016 following the Brexit; the dreadful road delays for customers trying to get to our Bellshill yard; and the regulatory pressures which involved us having to pay lawyers to help sort various issues.
A small number of us are still enthusiastic that Yooz is a worthwhile business where everyone can gain from re-using unwanted materials and goods and we are working hard on plans to make a comeback! If you are interested in helping, then please get in touch.
Of course our thoughts are also with those staff and individuals who helped Yooz to achieve what it managed over the years of trading since 2009. Thankfully many got jobs, but equally some did not, and we hope that the skills they gained will soon help them to find outlets for their talents.
