Jenny Science Tutor

Jenny Science Tutor Online tutor - GCSE science (chemistry, physics and biology) and foundation maths. Hello and welcome to my page.

I am an online science tutor and I love helping students to improve their grades by using scientifically proven methods of teaching and learning, alongside my ongoing work as a teaching assistant. My experiences of voluntary work with Yorkshire Mentoring, and supporting students in and out of the classroom, have helped me to establish a relaxed learning environment where students feel comfortable

to have a go and make mistakes. I ask lots of questions to check understanding and to help with memorising and retrieval. I have a 1st class degree in chemistry from the University of Nottingham, and A-levels at grade A in chemistry, physics and biology. I love my job as a science teaching assistant and tutor in a secondary school - foundation and higher level, supporting students with additional needs in the classroom, and in exams by scribing and reading. I had to work hard for my grades and I didn`t find it easy. I believe this helps with my teaching as I can see where students might be struggling, and adapt my methods and materials for each individual student. My experiences of working in education as well as in the private and voluntary sectors have provided me with an overview of the benefits of scientific skills and knowledge, and help me to put learning in context for students to make it more relevant. I have worked as a medicinal chemist for a pharmaceutical company, a computer programmer in finance and IT in London, and a fundraising manager for a national charity. My passion lies in teaching, especially working one-to-one where I have a track record of improving students' confidence and grades in a short time. I have lived in the USA for several years, and I now live near Bingley, West Yorkshire, with my husband, our two secondary school-age daughters and our dog, Teddy.

Interesting blog about UK physics education, "When Exam Boards Fail Physics Students" by Dr Alison Camacho, the founder and owner of 42tutoring Limited.

In 2025, UK physics education reached record student numbers — but beneath the surface lies a perfect storm. Exam board failures, a national shortage of specialist teachers, and threatened university departments now endanger the entire physics and engineering pipeline. This evidenced report explai...

Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer - what are your science memory hacks?

I'm always on the lookout for memory hacks and tricks, especially when I can use them to help GCSE science students. I discovered a new one today for remembering the seven diatomic elements in chemistry. Diatomic elements are pure elements that form molecules consisting of two atoms bonded together. I usually use the mnemonic Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer, or the “rotated L shaped” pattern of their locations in the Periodic Table, not forgetting to include easily-missed hydrogen, but I prefer:

The elements ending with "-gen" including halogens form diatomic molecules: Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Oxygen, the Halogens (Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine).

I'd love to know your science memory hacks. I've learned lots from students, teachers and other tutors over the last few years. Please share yours in the comments!

Seven elements form homonuclear diatomic molecules or simple molecules with their own atoms. This is a list of the 7 diatomic elements.

A rare 20% reduction on a Save My Exams subscription until Monday 2 December with code BLACKFRIDAY. I think there is a free 7 day trial period. Lots of subjects and exam boards (not just science).
I use this website all the time - notes, videos, exam questions and answers with lots of extra notes about the answers and lots of tips. It feels accessible and “friendly” - I especially like the illustrations and diagrams.

My favourite free maths website, Corbettmaths, is releasing a revision video every day between now and this year's GCSE exams. Maths teacher John Corbett "firmly believes students can make some massive gains between now and May," and I firmly agree!

The videos are 5-10 minutes long and practice questions will be available for each topic. There are separate videos for foundation and higher levels.

Don't just take my word for it - the first comment I saw on his "98 Days to Go" Pythagoras video was: "Thank you so much you have literally saved my life over the last few years and I can't express how much you have helped me thank you so much!"

Grade 9 topics will also be covered: "I'm definitely going to be going through the most challenging topics as well... just building up a few of the basics to begin with. As the weeks progress, we'll also cover dedicated papers that I'll create focussing on really difficult questions found at the very end of the papers."

Welcome to the Corbettmaths 100 Days to Go Revision Sessions! Every day at 3pm, a new revision video will be shared on YouTube and then uploaded here.
