After more than twenty-five years in their previous Manchester studio, SimpsonHaugh relocation to King Street marked the start of a new chapter for them in the city, and Spolia offered a direct way to carry their history with them.

Glass and terracotta samples salvaged from the practice's own material archive were brought to our manufacturing facility, where members of the team embedded the fragments by hand, working with the material before it was cured, dried, and polished. That act of making together gave the transition real weight.

Installed as a central countertop, Spolia now sits at the heart of the studio's daily life - a place for gathering, dining, and conversation. The surface holds visible traces of where it came from, keeping the practice's history present in a form that is practical, robust, and quietly intriguing.

Terre, Bottega D'Arte brings 33 warm colours inspired by the Italian countryside, while Moxie offers six contemporary veins in matt, polished, and mosaic finishes.

Winner of Archello’s Wall Finish of the Year, Kiln draws on the character of small-format, kiln-fired ceramics, with subtle variation and surface depth that feels crafted. The result is a richly tactile tile that adds warmth and rhythm to walls and floors alike.

Norfolk coastal home, designed by Studio 163. Externally modest, but full of considered detail, and built with sustainability in mind. Our Terracotta range runs across the floor with a quiet, rustic honesty.

Sidequest: Mosaics as Pixelated Portals to Paradise.

Maciver’s bold graphic language of colour, pattern, and positivity, meets the ancient craft of mosaic. Her first major mosaic installation, realised in close collaboration with and Solus, features a series of panels rendered in our 170-colour Sidequest range. The panels brought together Lakwena’s distinctive visual vocabulary, TREND’s mastery of glass mosaic, and the heritage of .venezia1888 , the historic Venetian furnace where smalti has been made since 1888.

The installation remains on view at our Clerkenwell showroom throughout the summer.

What does it mean to design with waste?

Ben McArthur, a recent graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, built Relic: a collection of modular furniture inspired by ancient artefacts and the stories they carry, made from Spolia, our UK terrazzo made largely from demolition waste.

Ben pressed his own history into the tiles: his grandfather's farm tools, his mother's key collection, and marbles from a childhood box. Every 300x300mm tile shares the same three holes, so the pieces stack and rebuild like Lego made of stone. Forgotten objects, given meaning again.

Ben graduated with first class honours, has exhibited at V&A Dundee, and is staying on for a masters. We are proud Spolia could play a part in his work, and delighted to support designers at the start of their careers.

Stiff+Trevillion , One Basinghall Avenue

At One Basinghall Avenue, Stiff+Trevillion were responsible for reshaping the building’s reception, as part of a wider scheme, following its transition to a multi-tenant commercial environment.

Within the main reception Spolia was introduced alongside marble inlay as part of a material language informed by mid-century precedents. The combination brings a measured richness to the reception and building arrival, drawing on architectural references associated with durability, craft, and permanence.

Three Chamberlain Square: A collaborative landmark in Birmingham's resurgent civic heart.

Over the past decade, Paradise Birmingham has decisively reshaped the city centre. The £1.2 billion masterplan removed the legacy ring road of the 1960s and 70s, reopened long-concealed views of the Grade I listed Town Hall, and established a sequence of new public squares that reconnect Birmingham with its civic core. As a proud Birmingham business, seeing this city transformed is something we don't take for granted.

A curved timber inlay set within our large-format porcelain flooring marks the reception zone, subtly organising the space while introducing warmth to the expansive interior.
