Mini mosaics, big ideas, and the cure for burnout - Day two of delivered.

We began the morning with whose colour theory workshop invited guests into creative dialogue with our Sidequest installation. Through the lenses of applied colour psychology, symbolism and placemaking, guests explored the palette, relationships and visual language of the space each leaving with a handmade mini mosaic.

As the evening unfolded, writer and sculptor took to the stage for a characteristically wide-ranging talk on the cultural and social potential of togetherness - touching on the climate crisis to urban design, and asking what we might all learn from collective thinking. Thought-provoking, timely, and very much in the spirit of our theme.

The night then drew to a close with Errol and Alex Rita, two of the UK's leading voices in DJing and cultural curation, brought their signature eclectic sound and community spirit to the room, joined by Rohan Ayinde for a performance that felt like the perfect embodiment of exuberant collectivity.

The final day of was, by some distance, the most alive. 🌈

The afternoon brought a hands-on mask-making workshop, with where guests crafted their own Venetian masks using mosaics and acrylics drawn from our Sidequest collection of 170 colours and shades.

As the workshop drew to a close, and .sass took over. Their fully improvised, cross-genre jam session filled the room with energy and set the tone for the evening ahead. True to their ethos, it was music as an antidote to loneliness; a roaming third space where strangers became a crowd.

At the start of the evening, took to the stage to share the concept behind Sidequest: Mosaics as Pixelated Portals to Paradise. She unpacked how fragmented tesserae become vibrant gateways of colour, pattern and meaning, and how the installation transforms individual pieces into shared experiences, inviting audiences to step through into collective, imagined worlds.

Then closed Clerkenwell Design Week in style. One of the most distinctive figures in electronic and alternative music culture, his set was exactly what you would hope for: instinct-driven, deeply curated, and utterly connected to the room.

Discover Quarter 35.

In this special edition, we celebrate the opening of our new Solus showroom in Birmingham, marking an exciting new chapter for the brand. Inside, CEO Marcus Bentley shares insight into the vision and journey behind the project.

We revisit Hearing the Eyes of the Skin, a memorable event held at our Clerkenwell showroom, bringing together Juhani Pallasmaa, Steven Holl, Peter MacKeith, and Roger Tyrrell to launch the audiobook of Juhani’s seminal work.

This issue also introduces a new occasional feature on Spolia, our terrazzo range that transforms debris into striking design inclusions. Through a series of case studies, we explore its versatility and application across projects.

Our products section features an array of spectacular tiles showcasing the many uses and forms that porcelain ceramic tiles can assume. ReCover is an innovative dry-lay system intended to facilitate circular design, whereas Sidequest is a mind-bending mosaic range that will delight the creative designers, to name but two.

We feature a collection of remarkable architectural projects: Three Chamberlain Square in Birmingham, part of the Paradise masterplan; Aurora in Glasgow, setting new standards in retrofit sustainability; Sunlight House in Manchester, an Art Deco landmark thoughtfully revitalised; and Legado Restaurant, where design and culinary craft come together in harmony.

This edition concludes with an ‘Under the Table’ conversation with Catherine Ramsden of offering personal insights into her work and approach to design.

Quarter is written, edited, and designed in-house by the Solus marketing team.

As always a special thank you to Editor Conleth Buckley and Senior Graphic Designer Ricardo J. for their continued creativity and dedication.

Our Birmingham Showroom

Our reception desk formed from Spolia: crushed samples and sections of the old showroom floor reassembled into a single surface. Embedded within it are keys from the original building, folding our own history into the new space.

Doubling down on Birmingham with our reimagined showroom.

Thirty years after Solus was founded in Birmingham, and 18 years since establishing our Head Office on this very site, this redesign reinforces our deep-rooted commitment to Birmingham and the Midlands.
Our CEO Marcus Bentley shares:

“The project has been two years in the making and represents, I think, a genuine statement of where this company is and where it is going. We already had beautiful showrooms in London and Manchester. What we lacked was something at home: a space at our head office worthy of the brand Solus has become, and one that could properly serve retail customers, luxury residential clients, architects, and interior designers alike. We wanted a showroom the whole company could be proud of. I believe we have one now.”

Created as part of the relaunch of the Birmingham showroom, this worktop acts as a material archive of the space that came before.

Sections of the original showroom floor and crushed tile samples were reclaimed and recomposed into a new terrazzo surface. Rather than removing the previous interior entirely, fragments of it have been carried forward and recast as a new architectural element.

Embedded within the terrazzo are keys from the original building. Once used to open and close the space, they now sit permanently within the material itself, acting as small artefacts that fold the building’s past into its present.
