What a great evening last week at the first-ever Aston Villa Foundation Community Partnership event at Villa Park.

Tia Barnes and Aidan Munnelly represented Zone, with Aidan delivering a 30-second spotlight on what we do.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with so many like-minded organisations within the partnership, all working to make a real difference across the Midlands.

A highlight of the evening was hearing from Aston Villa legend Ian Taylor, who shared some great insights from his time on and off the pitch.

We are delighted to have received the SME Supplier of the Year award, presented to and accepted by our Director, Aidan Munnelly, at the Lower Thames Crossing Staff Recognition Event last week.

We would like to say a massive thank you to the people within the LTC for organising the event and providing an opportunity to come together and celebrate the achievements and dedication shown across the programme so far.

We would especially like to thank Lauren Edmunds, Charlotte Condon, Jasvir K Sandhu, and the wider Balfour Beatty plc team. ✨ Happy New Year from Zone Contractors ✨

As we move into 2026, we’re reflecting on a year of meaningful social value delivery as part of the Lower Thames Crossing project, with a strong focus on inspiring future talent.

Throughout 2025, our team was proud to engage with local schools and students, helping to showcase the wide range of opportunities available within construction.

👨🏻‍🏫 Drapers' Academy
Aidan Munnelly delivered an engaging careers session aimed at inspiring students to consider a future in construction. A highlight of the day was the use of VR technology, allowing students to virtually operate an excavator on a live construction site - bringing the industry to life and sparking real interest.

🏫 The Coopers' Company and Coborn School
We were delighted to support an insights session with Year 12 students, providing a real-world perspective on apprenticeships, career progression, and opportunities within business administration and the wider construction sector. The enthusiasm and curiosity from the students reinforced the importance of investing time in future talent.

👷🏻‍♀️ Frances Bardsley Academy
In December, we also supported a careers fair at Frances Bardsley Academy, a girls’ secondary school, helping to promote construction and infrastructure as an inclusive and exciting career option for young women.

These activities reflect our continued commitment to creating a positive, lasting legacy through the Lower Thames Crossing - by supporting education, promoting skills development, and opening doors for the next generation.

A special thank you to Charlotte Condon for coordinating these events - your support has been instrumental in making them a success.

As part of our ongoing commitment to social value, we headed back to Mane Chance Sanctuary - a horse sanctuary we’ve proudly supported before through volunteering.

Aidan Munnelly and Tia Barnes from Zone teamed up with Sean (L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage), Lucy Lovegrove ( PLC), and engineers from Balfour Beatty to lend a hand.

This time, we were picking apples - destined to be sold to raise funds for the charity - and, of course, stopping to give the resident horses some well-deserved attention 🐴💛.

Our Operations Manager (Aidan Munnelly) recently teamed up with Balfour Beatty’s Ellie Chapman, AtkinsRéalis’ Devashree Juvekar, Alice Douglas & Lindsay Farmer, and Danny Sullivan Group's Katie Goodwin, LLB, for an incredible volunteering effort at Oakleaf Enterprise in Guildford. 💪🏽🎨

Oakleaf Enterprise is a vital charity supporting people with mental health needs in the Guildford area. Their ‘Safe Haven’ hub provides a crucial out-of-hours lifeline for those experiencing mental health crises. To help make this space more welcoming and comforting, on the day we all rolled up our sleeves and spent a productive day redecorating the hub.

We were also delighted to support Balfour Beatty on the M25 J10 project by donating the funds needed for paint - making this transformation possible.

At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to creating positive, lasting change in our communities. Thank you to everyone involved for making a real difference.

Our Operations Manager Aidan Munnelly recently joined forces with Balfour Beatty plc at YMCA England & Wales to promote construction careers to a group of incredible young individuals – all of whom are either asylum seekers or refugees still in their teens.

It's hard to imagine the challenges that young refugees in the UK face, having to leave their homes and seek safety in a new country. Despite these hardships, these young individuals displayed immense motivation and eagerness to learn, determined to better their situations through education and career development. It's truly inspiring!

The construction industry offers a wealth of opportunities for these resilient young people. With a growing demand for skilled professionals, construction can provide a stable, fulfilling career path and a sense of community. By learning vital skills, they can build a bright future not just for themselves, but for the communities they live in.

A special shoutout to Emma Millicent Higgs who attended the event from Hercules PLC, and Ellie Chapman from Balfour Beatty, who also arranged this event on behalf of the M25 J10 Project.

Aidan has gone above and beyond by creating a comprehensive roadmap for these young individuals, providing them with all the necessary information to start their careers in construction. This roadmap will act as a crucial tool to help them navigate the industry and achieve their dreams.

Let's continue to support and empower these young people as they embark on this promising journey. Together, we can make a difference!

Zone Contractors recently took part in a STEM day at Treetops SEND School, supporting the Lower Thames Crossing (LTC) Project. The event was organised by the brilliant Lauren Edmunds from Balfour Beatty, and included three sessions delivered to Year 8, 9, and 10 students. 👷🏼‍♂

The day began with an overview of Balfour Beatty and the LTC Project, followed by a talk from our Operations Manager, Aidan Munnelly. Aidan shared his career path in construction and spoke about his experience working in the industry with dyslexia, giving students insight into overcoming challenges and embracing diverse strengths.

We then ran a series of practical STEM activities, including Zone’s VR excavator simulator, LTC Minecraft, KNEX and spaghetti tower challenges, and a remote-control digger. These activities gave students the chance to explore problem-solving and teamwork in a hands-on way.

It was great to be joined by Jackson Compton from Balfour Beatty, and a huge thank you to Treetops School for welcoming us so warmly.

At Zone Contractors, we're always proud to support initiatives that inspire the next generation of construction professionals.

This week, we had the pleasure of contributing to a meaningful work experience opportunity for Scott on the M25 J10 project with Balfour Beatty. With ambitions of becoming a builder (or maybe a professional wrestler) —Scott brought energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm to everything he did.

Scott joined Zone’s Aidan Munnelly, Atkins’ Amy Cripps, and Balfour Beatty’s Ellie Chapman for a volunteering day at Mane Chance Sanctuary. Kitted out in full Zone PPE, he rolled up his sleeves and helped clear brambles to create more space for the sanctuary’s rescued horses.

A big thank you to Ellie Chapman for organising this opportunity, and to Mane Chance Horse Sanctuary for hosting us and letting us meet their amazing residents 🐴. The work they do to care for rescue horses and offer healing spaces for people is truly special.
