His work to strengthen personal tutoring, enhance student support, and lead key educational initiatives has had a lasting and positive impact across the School of Computer Science.

A proud moment for the School of Computer Science, University of Birmingham, as we celebrated alumnus Llion Jones, who received an honorary Doctor of Science (Hon DSci) at the University of Birmingham’s July 2026 graduation ceremony.

Llion graduated in 2006 with a degree in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, and in 2009 with a Masters in Advanced Computer Science and has gone on to shape the foundation of modern generative AI.

Llion’s journey from Birmingham graduate to global AI pioneer is extraordinary. His co‑authorship of 'Attention Is All You Need', the paper that introduced the Transformer architecture, has shaped systems like ChatGPT, Gemini and countless others. Few contributions have had such a profound impact on the future of technology.

As Co‑founder and CTO of Sakana AI, Llion continues to redefine what’s possible in artificial intelligence. His work inspires researchers, students, and innovators worldwide.

Congratulations, Llion, on this well‑deserved recognition. We’re proud to celebrate your achievements and the global impact of your work!

Huge congratulations to our 2026 computer science graduates! It was a fantastic day, and so great to see the achievements of our undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students in the School - time has flown since you started with us, but we can't wait to see what you do next!

Big announcement!

University of Birmingham has risen again in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and are now 68th in the world, our highest position in a decade.

This marks our fourth consecutive year of progress, with a rise of 23 places over that period and a place in the UK top 10.

What sits behind that progress is growing recognition of our teaching and research, alongside increasing confidence from employers in our graduates.

Our thanks go to all of the students, staff, alumni and partners from across the world who helped make this happen.

✨ Last week, we were delighted to host our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Celebration in the CS Atrium!

Following two hugely successful previous years, it was wonderful to welcome students and staff back on Wednesday 6 May for an event filled with creativity and culture. From 13:00–16:00, the atrium was buzzing with people coming together to celebrate diversity in all its forms.

Highlights included the debut of the Big British BragOff, a brilliant new food stall showcasing cakes from across the UK, alongside delicious Afro-Caribbean and South East Asian food, a photobooth, raffle, and music that kept the energy high throughout the afternoon.

We were also proud to host an art exhibition featuring stunning work by student artists Amish Gudur, Haniyah Ali, Jasper Bins, Sarah Ogundiran, and Mayesha Islam Abanti. Their pieces offered a powerful and beautiful celebration of different cultures and perspectives, and were a real focal point of the event.

Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed, and helped make the celebration such a success. Moments like these remind us of the diversity that makes our community thrive 💛
