Today is a fun day for us in the office..
Today is World Ampersand Day!

As we all know, the ampersand symbol, a unique character and logogram representing the word "and".

The origin of the symbol comes from ancient Rome during the first century A.D. as a ligature of the Latin word "et," meaning "and".

The word "ampersand" comes from the phrase "and per se and," meaning the character "and" by itself at the end of the alphabet. It was historically taught as the 27th letter of the alphabet.

And of course we use it to describe our service to our clients... we love to go further, beyond expectations... 'and then some'

Sustainability has become a word that means very little and everything at the same time.
Every company says they take it seriously. Not all of them do.
And in construction and fit-out, the gap between what gets said in a tender and what gets delivered on site can be considerable.

We are a verified sustainable business. That is not a badge we picked up to tick a box. It reflects a genuine effort to embed better choices into every project, material specifications, waste management, energy efficiency, the way we help clients think about the long-term performance of their buildings.

The Building Safety Act and evolving planning requirements are pushing sustainability up the agenda anyway. But I would rather our clients think about it because it is the right thing to do, not just because they have to.

What Does Value Actually Look Like in a Fit-Out?

One of the most common conversations I have early in a project is around budget...
Not how much will this cost? but what does good value actually look like here?

They are different questions.

A client who spends less on the design and survey stage often ends up spending more on the build, because the information going out to tender is not tight enough.
Contractors price risk. If they cannot see clearly what is expected of them, they protect themselves. And that protection ends up in your contract sum.

Getting the technical groundwork right.. accurate surveys, proper drawings, a well-managed design process, is not a nice to have.
It is where your contingency budget actually comes from.

We have been telling clients this for nearly four decades.
The ones who listen tend to have smoother projects.

NHS projects are a different discipline entirely.

The standards are higher.
The stakeholder landscape is more complex.
The tolerance for delay or disruption is, rightly, very low.
And the procurement process has its own language that takes time to learn properly.

We have been delivering NHS projects for years, and what gives us an edge is that we came from retail first.
That background means we are used to working at pace, managing multiple projects simultaneously and being completely on top of the detail.
Those habits do not disappear when you walk into a healthcare environment, they just become more valuable.

The high street conversation has shifted..

For years, the narrative was decline. Empty units, falling footfall, online eating everyone’s lunch. And there is undoubtedly some truth in that!

But what I am seeing on the ground right now tells a different story.
Retailers are investing again. Not in the same way as before, but with more purpose.

The brands that survived the last few years know exactly what they want their physical space to do and they are prepared to spend properly to make it happen.

Fit-out standards are going up. Briefs are more considered. Clients are coming to us earlier in the process, which makes for better outcomes all round.

It is not a boom. But it is real, meaningful activity, and the pipeline feels solid.

What are others seeing out there? Would be interested to hear how it looks from different parts of the industry.

Before a single drawing is produced, a planning application submitted or a contractor briefed, you need accurate information about the space you are working with.
