Here is an example of how converting fabrications to castings can deliver real business benefits. In this example our customer was fabricating wheels used on fuel and safety equipment hose reels. The success of the product led them to investigate other options that would free up welding capacity. NovaCast's solution was to gravity die cast the wheels in A356 aluminium with a T6 heat treatment to improve tensile properties, creep resistance (deformation or distortion over time), and fatigue resistance. This 12KG investment cast stainless steel gearbox housing has recently gone through our quality control department prior to shipping. It is cast in CF8M, which is the cast equivalent of wrought AISI 316 stainless steel. CF8M was selected for this casting because the molybdenum content in the alloy increases general corrosion resistance and resistance to pitting by chlorides. The casting was machined to tight tolerances, drilled and tapped.

Two sizes of enclosure rings ready to leave the foundry. These 18” and 24” rings are sand cast in LM25TB7 at our Melksham foundry and machined all over. The aluminium castings have been solution treated and stabilised. This process homogenises the aluminium, helping to improve ductility and machinability.

This sand mould is for the Norton Commando front wheel hubs we are casting in LM25TF aluminium for Andover Norton. The image shows the cast-iron brake track insert in place within the mould together with a filter within the gating system. The filter is positioned to reduce the velocity of the alloy flow into the mould, producing a more laminar flow that reduces turbulence, lowers the risk of sand erosion and filters any unwanted impurities to limit inclusions.
