(FOSSIL ALERT LAST PIC)
It’s Not everyday you get to work on the grounds of a lighthouse but we did this week. The wall itself we rebuilt is part of a 250m boundary wall that fortifies the lighthouse itself, with the wall being 200 years old it was a nice omen albeit small to the trowels of yesteryear. This wall comprises of the original reclaimed blue lias limestone excavated from the cliff side behind us many moons ago.
While working the stone, we actually uncovered a much older piece of history hidden right in the middle of a limestone block! I chiseled out what rockhounds call a "deer heart" fossil—which is what they call a bivalve steinkern. It's a perfect internal mud cast of an ancient clam that lived millions of years before this wall was ever built. Just a pretty bonus find on an already amazing job site! ⛏️🌊🐚
